Hi all,

We're in the initial stages of looking at moving from Internet leased lines at each of our schools to two individual schools with a leased line each from separate ISPs, and then the remainder of schools having private Point-to-Point links to each of them.

Interested in hearing from anyone who has done similar before, and - specifically for the Point-to-Point - also looking for recommendations for potential suppliers aside from the big few (BT, Virgin, etc.).

Cheers.

That sounds very much like the arrangement my MAT has. We use Charterhouse as a telecom provider, who in turn provide leased lines for internet at two of our sites and l2 point to point “wires only” connections between the rest of them.

They in turn subcontract out to OpenReach and Virgin so we get a bit of carrier diversity but that’s transparent to us, we pay Charterhouse to manage it all

Hi @Jonah,

The we offer this by all the major carriers.

Virgin and BT Openreach insist on putting their own boxes on the end of some point to point fibre and present either 100mbit, 1gbit or 10gbit and prices vary accordingly.

Cityfibre offer the same and dark fibre so you can put your own optics on the end and run at whatever speed you want.

If you send me a PM I'll happily give you a quote and make sure you use the most cost effective carrier.

We've installed this type of solution for well over hundred sites already so have a lot of knowledge and installing and worming with the carriers.

Other than that also check out installing your own fibre or a point to point wireless solution.

Thanks

Dave

Hi Jonah

if you'd like some quotes to compare, I'd be happy to quote. We can offer most carriers, and project manage your installs etc. Drop me a PM or contact me directly if it's of interest.

You'll need to have a think about resilience in terms of your firewalls/filtering etc, i.e. a ring toplogy might be better than P2P, subject to your locations. It sometimes works out more resilient and flexible to have a private WAN for not much difference in price.

Happy to discuss,

cheers

We've just completed a network refresh and we have a VPLS in place now and got rid of the point to points. I wasn't involved in the tendering for it but have used both MPLS & VPLS in the past.

We have several hundred sites connected on the VPLS now back to our data centres works great for us. Each site has a local internet connection and we route via that where we can for internet traffic.

Give Shayne Grove @ CoConnect a shout ([email protected]). He'll talk you through all of your options and would be happy to give a good deal. We (our mac - 1 secondary and 6 primary schools) have an MPLS provided and managed by them with 100mbps leased lines at all sites.
