Bulk Conversions / Compression Of MP4 files? Maybe Handbrake CLI?

Hello,

 

We have a folder with hundreds of MP4 files. They all appear to be larger than needed in size. For example one is 720p 20 minutes and is just short of 2GB in size.

 

I was wondering if anyone can help with compressing these down without loosinng qulaity please? I was maybe thinking of using handbrake CLI with a batch file and having an input and output folder?

 

I thought I would ask as this seems something common in with media studies and I guess someone has something already.

Probably overkill for this purpose - but I have found a docker container running Handbrake with "watch" folders useful in the past:

I have seen this before. I was looking for something a more simple. Simply drop the file into the input folder, run the script and leave them to convert in the output folder.

I am going to have to consider what I am going to run this on. I have 3 year old Dell virtual host server with plenty of RAM and CPU power. Or would it be better with a desktop machine that has a GPU? Although I might not have anything good enough.

If you're not looking for a persistent, automated approach that watches for new input files, you could use FormatFactory. Get all your input files listed in Explorer with a suitable search query (size and frameheight) and then drag them all into FormatFactory. Start the batch then leave it. Once done, delete your source files. Works well if your source files are spread throughout a tonne of different folders.
