Watched yesterday. Really interesting, already there are lots of people who disagree with the message there.

 

For me, the main message is, we cannot continue as it is, we should not just replace one type of energy for the other. I think we should carb our consumption and reproduction rate - but I have no idea how.

And in my eyes we need our political leaders to want to change. Just making more money shouldn't be the goal.

I'm loathed to watch it - not because of the message, but because Moore is a sensationalist moron; a tabloid documentary maker at most.

You could go too far of course - wipe out half the planet, EMP and kill off all technology and let us go back to hunting & foraging for food, bringing us back to how "nature intended us". Of course things would soon get back around - after all we can see animals using tools with no prompting or influence from humans.

Nothing will properly improve without massive external influence, whether it's disease (heh), Thanos, natural disaster or war - that's the population control. And then, until we can sack off things that make some people think irrationally - money, resources, religion, things will always come full circle again.

I've spoken about it before, and refer to it as the "Star Trek" timeline - where, like in ST money no longer exists and/or is no longer the driving force behind existence and humans come together as a species. But whilst as a species we're both intelligent yet so monumentally stupid, it won't happen.

Not seen it, but agree with the premise outlined above.

 

This won't be a popular opinion, but on the "reproduction" front, there is the "problem" of biology in that many women are compelled by millennia of evolution to want to have children (and many men, though for a lot of men it's more the bit that leads up to the fertilisation that is of interest), I think a bit of social engineering would go a long way. Most popular media unconsciously(?) pushes the idea that having kids is the greatest thing ever. Even when it's not the greatest thing, family is often a plot driver. An estimated 80%* of American TV/Movies would be no more if the "daddy issues" plot/sub-plot/motive was unavailable for use. If media wasn't constantly pushing the idea that having kids was somehow the ultimate "win" and celebrated those who'd made other choices, might we see fewer people choosing to have children? We've recently seen that, when it suits them, the media can certainly produce a unified narrative.

 

I'm constantly amazed by folk who will be "saving the planet" by harping on about their lifestyle/food choices, but will happily keep choosing to bring extra people into the world who will inevitably have a huge negative impact on the environment.

 

As for consumption, it's not going to happen under a capitalist system. Capitalism only "works" if more and more stuff can be sold - so buying more stuff is constantly pushed on us. (This might also explain why no-one is willing to grasp the bull of population control by the horns).

 

I have tried very hard to make the above apolitical!

Heh well there you go then. Usual dribble and no doubt it'll be used as "scientific evidence" by deniers for years to come.

I will urge people to make own opinion by watching, not by reading just a opinion article - own by multi billion dollar parent company.

 

For me the most important was that we just can't continue business as usual. And when I see that big guns are so happily to invest in Biomass energy (still burning things - CO2 emissions) - it makes me wonder why? The filmmakers, I think, wanted for people to start a discussion, to start to wonder about how we consume and how much. I know lots of people think, nah not my problem, I will be dead by than etc. But I ask you look outside, remember last winter? Rain and more rain. Last week we had 20+ degrees in a middle of April, Europe didn't have a proper winter, hardly any snow - I have family in Poland and Czech Republic - they usually have plenty of snow for months. Things are not normal and we can already see it.

But if the our leaders don't do anything, I think nothing will change. I'm just worried...
