I've been reading the Nagios threads on here and downloaded the PDF on how to install but after having looked at it twice now it just seems far too much aggro to sit and configure. Can't be doing with all those text config files and 4 line long scripts just to get a basic system up and running

After a quick Google looking for something along the lines of how IPCop works (install + config of app from one CD) I came across this...

GroundWork Monitor Community Edition :: GroundWork Open Source

Seems to have Nagios, Cacti and some other bits on it. Currently dowloading the VMWare image to try out... anyone else gave it a go?

Great find! However than VM Image size is appalling =( One the plus side its half-term and no ones around.

INTERNET INTERNET, YOU'RE ALL MINE!

Hehe yeah it's a bit on the large size, still I got a 10MB JANET connection near enough all to meself so no problems... think Sourceforge need faster web servers though :p

i concur - that image is bananas! But well worth the download it seems to me. Ill check it out and see how we go. Heres hoping.

How did you guys get on with Groundwork in the end?

I downloaded the vmware image and it looked pretty cool, I haven't read the manual yet and have only setup Windows hosts with a ping test and nothing else. Has anyone got any further than this?

Got it running, looks very pretty just need to read around it a bit and figure out how to actually get some useful results out - had so much on yesterday I only got the chance to glance at it so far...

left it downloading all afternoon, then went to work with it and ... cant decompress the file. File is broken.

suck. to. be. you (aka me).

lets try again!! Anyone have it working yet and can comment pros and cons?

Just had an email from the GroundWork mailer with the welcome links etc - need to install some WMI addons for Windows system monitoring so guess that's next on the list. Here's the text of the email...

Anyone else finding this overly complicated?

I have my hosts setup with icmp checks, I installed the wmi plugins/client on a windows server but theres no real guide on the next stage.

If u find this bad take a look at manually installing Nagios, why does open source always = over complicated

Exception to the rule is the eeePC, only time I've seen Linux working successfully on a consumer PC

Hi guys,

I am not so sure about the difficulty of Nagios install. I am no way a linux warrior, but id say im a 6/10. Ofcourse i installed Nagios on Ubuntu with a step-by-step how to, and if i didnt have that i would have definatley been lost.

Back on topic though - i have been using groundwork for the last 2 days now and i used the install how to for ubuntu here.

SourceForge.net: Files

So far so good, very easy to navigate, very nice to look at and very "complete" (i am yet to hit an error because of missing/moved file , that type of thing).

Easy to setup hosts, or let it discover. It still needs some work though, it failed to pick up any of my 3com gear instead labelling them something else. I think that this might be something in NAgios to setup.

Still more to play with though but id say well worth throwing it on a vm server get to get your hands dirty.

I've no paticular interest in using groundwork as I have a fully functional Nagios/Cacti install (if your having trouble with either of these bits of software please let me know and I'll try and help) however reading up on it I discovered one of it's components 'NeDi'. Which looks quite interesting and I will be trying it out.

And for those of you baulking at the amount of configuration you have to do, tough. The software isn't psychic. You have to educate it how your network fits together. Just hold on to the fact that it is well worth it in the end.

I will happily disagree with anyone saying that the nagios / cacti installs are a PITA.

I am not from a *nix background but I had nagios installed and running in around 30 mins and yes it will take you alot longer to get all your monitors in there but hey thats a good thing, let me explain....

In order to have your sources monitotred you need to have some understanding of your network layout and what links to where even if you plan just to use ping checks, a quick spider diagram of the network should help you get a rough idea although strictly speaking you should all have this as part of your network docs :D

So the initail install very quick, configuration time depends on how deep you want to monitor.

I have ahd a look at groundworks and found that it was too bloated for what it is supposed to do.

Yeah but having to set the thing up by editing multi page text files isn't exactly quick \ intuitive, that's what gets on my nerves tbh

On that front GroundWork looks a bit better but now it's making it do something useful that's gonna show whether it's any good...

Edit again :p

Looks like monitoring Windows Servers is another custom code jobbie, is detection \ monitoring of switches and printers more automatic? Really don't have the time to spend days reading up WMI code just to monitor if services are running or not

Thats pretty much where I got to. I have installed the WMI scripts on my Windows box but need the "commands" (which I think should already be part of Groundworks) to start any real monitoring.

Just thought I'd post to say that I've got my 1-wire adapter working with digitemp and temperature sensors in Groundwork Monitor.

So I can now monitor the temperature in the server room, cabs etc...

Yeah it runs on an old version of java which is a sticking point and if you don't have that installed it moans.

Otherwise bunging in stuff to check is quite simple.

If you want to buy the pro version it is £12k P/A

Ok no probs I've now got it monitoring the temperature in the server room and reporting ink and toner levels for hp4600, hp2600n, k850 and k550 printers.

I'll be putting some info together on this as the 2600's are a pain.
