Interview Questions for School Desktop Engineer role?

I genuinely didnt know where to post HaHa.

I am looking for about 10 tech releated questions for a desktop engineer who can potentially work in schools running SIMS. Windows 10, Server, network related questions.

Has anyone got any sets of questions they can share?

I'm sure lots of examples will be forthcoming and this will be covered in other threads too. However, can I asked how much experience you are expecting the applicant to have. I would suggest you focus at least as much on team fit, attitude to work, ability to learn quickly and general soft skills. If your recruiting at a junior level, I'd put the latter as more important than deep technical experience.

I went for a desktop support role 2018 still remember the questions haha!

 

1: if I give you a list of IP addresses across the whole site, how can I find out if they are online without leaving my desk?

 

2: if I give you a list of ip addresses, what things could you do to return the hostname.

 

3: you get called to an office because the printer is not working and showing as offline. What would you check

 

4: computers have just been upgraded from 32bit windows 7 to 64 bit windows 10. Before the upgrade the printer used to map fine. What could be the issue.

 

5: your manager has given you the task of deploying a new printer to an office of 20 machines. Please tell me the steps you would take to deploy the printer to all 20 machines, starting from plugging the printer in.

 

6: tell me what active directory is and what it’s used for

 

7: tell me what group policy is and what it’s used for.

 

8: tell me what dhcp and what it does

 

9: tell me what dns is and what is does

 

10: what is an exchange server.

 

11: what is an sql server

 

12: user can’t log on to computer, says the trust relationship has failed. What steps would you take to get the computer working.

 

13 user can’t login to the computer. Says no logon servers available. Tell me what steps you would take to resolve this issue.

 

14: user unable to login to the computer. Please tell me what steps you would take in order to work out what the problem is and how you could resolve the issue.

 

15: tell me a time you have gone above and beyond.

 

16: tell me a time you have had to think on your feet without getting advise

 

17: tell me a time you have had to work as part of a team.

 

18: tell me a time you have been in an uncomfortable position and what you done to resolve it.

 

19: tell me how you keep up to date with advancements in technology.

 

20: you are about to make a group policy change at the root of group policy. Tell me how you would go about doing this.

 

Think that is all of them. These were for a desktop support role in the NHS.

When I went for a role in a school (different to where I am now) I was given practical tasks to do and asked questions whilst I completed them. I can't remember all of them, but this is what I remember. Lasted about an hour.

 

Had a PC in front of me, and was asked to take the whole PSU out (wires and everything), and then refit it.

- is there an advantage to upgrading a 400w PSU to a 500w PSU

- can you point out the CMOS and tell me what it does

- what does RAM stand for

 

Then turn PC on and log in as a local admin (details provided).

- [at the login screen], before you login, what is a quick way to find the PCs hostname from the logon screen

- what would you do if after logging in there were no desktop icons or taskbar

- what is a keyboard shortcut to open the Run dialog

 

Then create a new user account by using the command prompt only

- what's the difference between command prompt and powershell

- if a user had a network error, what is the first test/command you'd enter into command prompt

 

Then disable the webcam

 

And a few other questions as well... Can't remember all of them! The above was for a more junior role.
