what alternative backup VLE out there

With teams getting overwhelmed and other plcoud vendors struggling to cope with user numbers, what other alternatives are out there as a fall back for content delivery {LDS] and learning management [LMS]? Say Teams goes out tomorrow for ne reason or another and is taking hours perhaps days to recover, how does a teacher deliver content and a lesson to students at home.Not talking about backup like Veem or Avepoint...

Self hosted Moodle? Not dependent on cloud capacity, though my experience was it does still slow down with heavy use.

 

Easy to set up if you have existing hosting capacity, but the user training is quite tough.

Google Classroom is the main other option, but self host with Jitsu and Moodle. In the end fall back to email, one drive, google docs. That's all they're replacing really.

If you don't want a self hosted Moodle, there are companies who will host it for you. Moodle themselves will host a site for upto 500 users. Another alternative is Blackboard.

I should add - Moodle works with OAuth which we switched to last year instead of LDAP - works really well.

If you do need a VLE in place (I don't think many do - we don't appear to have any issues with teams) then Moodle is certainly the way to go. If you want someone to host and look after it for you, speak to Overnet Data (best known for Edulink) who are awesome and they know it inside out.

Google will tell you that is Classroom isn't a VLE, though more and more it's looking like one to me.

 

Anyway, back to the question - If it does have a problem I think the answer is "Well, it's out for everyone - sit tight folks - have a day to yourselves" personally.

Are we really going to spend hours training people to jump onto an alternative solution just in case something goes down for a few hours?

I think @paulkerton summarised the whole issue. Spending a fortune in time money and effort to have a system that would likely fail like Teams and others would, with added aggro of training support, backups and syncing the content as there is no point having it if the content will be 3 months out of date when the proverbial hits the fan.With BYOD and some apps being overly OS dependent e.g showbie/Goodnotes, plus these big vendors have vested interest to scale up on demand in times like this and Covid might be that huge nudge in that direction not only in IT but how we work,play, buy, study, relate in many years to come
