Config Manager to the Cloud?

Hi folks,

 

Is there an equivalent of Config Manager, but in the cloud?

 

I know there's Intune, which doesn't seem to be as powerful. Basically I'd like to see what the options are of putting Config Manager like functionality but in the cloud. I know there's the new Endpoint Manager which seems to be in the cloud. I'm confused!

 

Can anyone explain what the options are in simple terms?

Simplest term is it's Intune. You're right it's not as power as SCCM yet but they are building it up constantly. We've recently moved all our mobile workstations to Intune from SCCM. We only really use SCCM now for suites and image deployments.

There's also Endpoint Manager, but is that just bringing SCCM and Intune into one product?

 

And presumably Intune requires Azure, or an Azure server of some sort?

iirc SCCM is being renamed Endpoint Manager and it's a mixture of Intune and SCCM. Which SCCM already is as it has some Intune features in it already. I don't know the licensing side of Intune, it doesn't require a Server to run on.

Have a look at Desktop Central from ManageEngine. All works via the internet and a client installed on the machine.

I've been looking at this as well -

 

I don't have SCCM at the moment, just old fashioned WSUS & deploy workstations with MDT. I have no need for the app deployment bits of SCCM as I just use GPOs and MSI's.

 

However I naturally want to better support roaming devices & have built out an SCCM install for testing. But to be honest - Is there any point? MS are pushing people towards Windows Update for business to replace the patching side of things & intune can deploy apps anywhere (So my roaming devices would still get apps)

I don’t think that’s quite right. The suite of products that Configuration Manager is in is being moved from System Center to Endpoint Manager. Endpoint Manger includes Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager and Intune. The actual product itself hasn’t changed yet, it’s just the branding. I expect the two will be brought closer together but apart from the label on the box, nothing has changed yet
