mavhc Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 From the blog post: Improved meeting control features: 'mute' and 'remove' For our Education customers, only the meeting creator, Calendar event owner, or person who creates a meeting on an in-room hardware device will be allowed to mute or remove other participants in a meeting. This ensures a teacher, as a meeting creator or Calendar event owner, can't be removed or muted by students participating in the event. Check out our Help Center to learn how to assign meeting creation privileges to teachers and staff members. We recommend that you assign these privileges to the organizational units (OUs) that contain your faculty and staff members. Improved teacher controls for nicknamed meetings Participants will not be able to re-join a meeting after the final participant has left if: The meeting was created using a short link like g.co/meet/nickname The meeting was created at meet.google.com by entering a meeting nickname in the "Join or start a meeting” field The meeting was created in the Meet app by entering a nickname in the “Meeting code” field This means if the teacher is the last person to leave these types of meetings, students cannot join later without the teacher. We’ve also heard from some admins that they don’t want students to be able to create meetings. To do so, use this Help Center article to assign meeting creation privileges to teachers and staff only. 1
Zoom7000 Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 FYI, if you're planning to just use livestreaming, you can actually leave Hangouts disabled for students if needed. With Hangouts disabled, they can still watch the live streams. Glad to see Google are tweaking things for Edu, but I suspect we'll have committed to a certain way of working before those tweaks arrive. Just be sure to note that live streaming currently only works for users within the same domain. So you can't put a public link out and allow non domain users to watch the live stream.
The_IT_Guy Posted March 30, 2020 Posted March 30, 2020 Do you have to enable the live streaming option somewhere? When I create a calendar hangout it still just shows hangouts meet in the options? Also does it record by default or do you have to enable this? Are the new features from Google enabled yet? Apologies for all the questions. Thanks

Thanks Yes, in the Admin Console, you need to browse to: Apps > G Suite > Settings for Hangouts Meet and Google Hangouts > Meet settings And then turn on streaming.
The_IT_Guy Posted April 1, 2020 Posted April 1, 2020 Does anyone know with the live stream option, is it possible for students watching on the live stream link to submit questions via the chat feature? Or for the people list to be populated with the students watching on the live stream link?

Or for the people list to be populated with the students watching on the live stream link? No, live stream is a one-way stream. The viewers can only watch, there is no interaction with the presenter. The workaround here would be to use Google Classroom or a shared Google Doc to take questions from the students.

The whole point of a Ms live stream is a one way video, but I am fairly certain chat still works, certainly has on the events I have watched by teams live. No need to go over to the dark side...

Nope it is absolutely correct. There is no chat option available in a Google Hangouts Meet Live Stream. 1
Theblacksheep Posted April 3, 2020 Posted April 3, 2020 Nope it is absolutely correct. There is no chat option available in a Google Hangouts Meet Live Stream. This. You have also have students blocked from joining meets, but they can still view a live stream.
mavhc Posted April 3, 2020 Posted April 3, 2020 They can chat in Chat or Classroom stream anyway, no need to have it all in one window, we have multitasking computers now

mavhc Posted April 3, 2020 Posted April 3, 2020 Good job you can turn them back on again then. Can you globally turn off commenting in Classroom?
Zoom7000 Posted April 5, 2020 Posted April 5, 2020 Good job you can turn them back on again then. Can you globally turn off commenting in Classroom? No, this setting isn't available in the Admin Console. The stream has to be turned off per classroom, but can be toggled on or off by any teacher of the class.
