karan_jhr Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 Hi I have Server 20102R2 with AD+DNS+DHCP on 1 Domain Controller. Is it safe to proceed with in-place upgrade to Server 2016? Will it take care of upgrading all 3 seemlessly? thanks
3s-gtech Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 Safe to do: yes. Better to go to 2019 if licensing allows. 1
karan_jhr Posted March 5, 2020 Author Posted March 5, 2020 thanks i tried 2019 but its saying? Active Directory on this domain controller does not contain Windows Server 2019 ADPREP /FORESTPREP updates. See https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=113955. what do you suggest?
howartp Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 We did 2008 R2 to 2016 (via 2012) at half term. If you google your error, you'll find you need to run some adprep commands manually first. Peter

See https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=113955. what do you suggest? Ooh, been years since I’ve seen those! You just need to run adprep and forestprep from the 2019 installer. https://robertsmit.wordpress.com/2018/10/04/upgrading-windows-server-2016-domain-controller-to-windows-server-2019-windows2019-ws2019/ You’ll need to make sure that you’re using DFS-R for sysvol replication instead of FRS too, first. 1
karan_jhr Posted March 5, 2020 Author Posted March 5, 2020 thanks i used adprep.exe /forestprep /forest domainname ADPrep /domainprep /domain domainname and it upgraded the AD now on secondary AD2, shall i run these again?
3s-gtech Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 If it’s on the same domain and forest, shouldn’t be any need to. 1
