We currently have a Drobo Pro which is starting to show signs of age, so we're looking to replace in April.

What's everyone using for there on-prem backup storage? We'd be looking for something that's rack mount ideally and not overly expensive

Any advice is greatly appreciated

I used to run Buffalo gear. Had to fix it once a week.

I now run Synology gear, and have to fix it less than once a year.

I like it very much. Their rackmount stuff is competitively priced and the software is great.

Any thoughts on the RS819 with 24TB WD red? We're only a small special school and currently use around 3TB of backup capacity

Nas will be great. We do use WD red a lot - although starting using gold recently. Do you need 24tb though for a 3tb data set ?!

I was thinking RAID 10 so 12TB usable and future expansion, may be over the top though

We're looking at £1044 with 24TB or £820 for 16TB. To replace all disks with 6TB at current pricing would cost around £700

Just replacing mine with: SuperMicro server with 12 bays direct attached storage, got a really good deal on 8TB SAS drives too. Normally just get sata but they were only £20 per drive more than the cheapest SATA alternative.

It's replacing a god awful qnap NAS. Never ever touching them again.

What issues did you encounter with the QNAP can I ask?

Random reboots. Contacted support multiple times, they couldn't resolve it. Updated from firmware to firmware and it never fixed it. Ran memtest on it for over 24hrs and found no issues.

It's a combination of the issue (which is seemingly rare, and wouldn't necessarily happen to another one) plus more importantly, the support being utterly useless that's put me off ever buying a Qnap again.

We use our old two old dell servers with direct attached storage. One for backups and for replication should we lose our main servers in a different building.

I know you're pursuing an on-prem, self managed backup, but if you're interested in managed backup with both an on-prem and cloud backup for a reasonable price, let me know, I'd be happy to send some info/pricing. All the kit is managed and under warranty and you get off-prem included.

Could I get more info on that?
