We're going to be moving to this from Redstor in April for our SIMS Server. We currently pay £900 a year for 90GB of storage, I've been quoted £15 per month for 1TB with Ovh

I am interested in it as I already use Veeam and it would be great to get a once a week backup copy off site into a nice safe spangly datacentre somewhere.

Interested if anyone is using it in anger.

We've looked into it in the past but the cost of hosting is too much for education, espcially in this level of cuts we've been experiencing. We have calculated that the combined size of our full backup files is approximately 5TB and that's just live data. We'd also like to archive our end of year backups for 5 years, which are 3TB each. So we'd need something like up to 20TB and that doesn't come cheap.

Based on the figures @localzuk posted on Discord, backing up 20TB to Azure (archive tier blob storage) would only cost £300 per year.

I think the secret is to not to go toocrazy with cloud backup - you don't need to back up everything every day 365 days a year, only really backing up to a cloud to mitigate losing your entire site. the chances of this happening are very low so despite it being a high risk is is so unlikely that it is not worth spending £Thousands or Tens of £Thousands to mitigate.

Doing one full backup a month and reverse incrimentals once or twice a week would cover that "nuke on school" scenario adequately without eating through too much bandwidth. That's my plan anyway!

We looked at Cloud Connect, and we just can't understand the high cost for it - what is the middle-man offering between Veeam and the actual hosting? That's the big question that no-one has been able to answer me so far.

So, we ended up going with Cloudberry (which is pretty cheap as a one off purchase!) and using Azure archive storage. The big costs are the upload and download. Data just sitting there is pretty cheap - so storing yearly backups is very cheap to do.

We have 64TB in there at the moment, with a weekly upload of data anywhere between a full backup (17TB) and 1TB (block based changed data). We spend £194 per month on this now, but I have plans to change how we back things up (we currently back every VM up every week to it, but this is unnecessary, so I'm going to tier my backups - SIMS/Data etc... every week, infrastructure stuff less often). We've also not been very tidy with our data - so there's probably a chunk of it we can simply delete.

If you're looking for a cost effective Veean Cloud Connect Repository thats based in the UK (Harrogate) As one of the forum sponsors we're offering a great price of £23.92 per month for 1Tb worth of space. This is fully scalable with a flexible monthly costs with no tie ins.

We also offer the ultimate in disaster recovery options to cover all eventualities from crypto to fire. Been UK based we can recover your data to hard drives from our warehouse and ship same day via courier or allow you to collect. We also have the availability of HP and Dell servers which we could pre-configured and fully restored all your data to the server and ship to your site if this was something you would like to help you sleep better at night.

Free trials are currently available to all Edugeek members, get in touch if you'd like a chat or to try out our service.

Out of interest is there anyway to pay up front for this rather than monthly?

Veeam Backup & Replication v10 will have object storage support so you'll finally be able to backup to Azure blob storage directly without any middle-men involved.

B2 still won't be supported, but Wasabi should be since it's S3 compatible.

I'm totally lost when it comes to the object storage thingy - How are you guys buying storage from Azure/Amazon etc & how does it work? :s - I always get a bit scared of cloud stuff that's billed on usage.

Here, we have an Azure Storage account in our Azure account, in that we have a container which holds the data. In our backup software (currently using CloudBerry) we then enter the settings for this and tell the backup to utilise the Archive tier storage on the account. That's all there is to it.

We also have a rule set up in Azure that deletes data that is more than 180 days old. We buy Azure credits from our MS reseller, and add them to Azure periodically, and the costs are deducted from those.

We have an AWS account set up that charges to our departmental credit card. You can set up alerts for when the monthly bill goes over a certain amount - we're currently spending around £200 a month on AWS storage, which we aim to cut considerably by moving to Backblaze.

Hi David,I hope you don't mind me asking after months of this thread. Can you please let me know how you're finding Backblaze and if it supports VEEAM?

Thanks in advance.

Don't forget, backing up to S3 doesn't provide the same benefits of Veeams Cloud Connect offering from the "middle-men" ;)

Pros

1) You get immutable backups

2) Low cost upfront

Cons

1) Immutable backups mean storage usage will continually grow, costs can spiral.

2) You're not protected from an "insider attack" as Veeam call it. If someone chagnes the retention points to 1 or 1000 you can be in hot water in both scenarios

3) Testing backups usually incurs exgress charges (you should be testing cloud restores monthly as a minimum)

4) No guarantee of data sovereignty

Food for thought :tape:
