unixman_again Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 "UK newspaper and magazine publishers lost almost £170m in digital revenue last year as technology designed to stop advertisements from appearing next to hard-hitting content, such as shootings and terrorism, also inadvertently blocked them from appearing in some of the most popular stories of the year." https://www.theguardian.com/media/2020/jan/20/uk-publishers-losing-digital-ad-revenue-due-to-content-blacklists
elsiegee40 Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 It sounds like they’re using a very blunt instrument to decide where ads can’t be placed. They’re say that Photoshoot throws a false positive by filters wanting to detect stories about shooting, ie suffering from the old Scunthorpe problem. Profanity filtering improved very rapidly and I am sure this will too if it’s losing money for the media and advertisers. 1
Reverend_Dan Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 Hopefully certain ones are loosing ad revenue because people like me are installing chrome extensions like this one on all the machines in the school https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/daily-mail-blocker/ghjadbffkapbnlbccfjoljfhgolbofhi
synaesthesia Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 You should be careful of that though, it's not your place to decide what sites people view to that level - safeguarding yes, bias no. People might need viewpoints of, er, "intellectually challenged" rags for their research and school work to perhaps balance against other media sources. 1

We install uBlock Origin across all PCs, but I would be very wary of blocking individual news sites for the reasons above!
Reverend_Dan Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 Dont worry they can still use edge and yes RE tend to use mail articles a lot as sources
