moving from redirected documents to Onedrive

Hey

 

We have been moving all our users on prem documents to onedrive and our on prem shared drive to sharepoint, We currently have redirect document and desktops when the transition is finished and everyone has uploaded there documents is the best way forward to first change all the permissions to there document folder to read only and leave there desktops as redirected. We are currently not mapping onedrive or sharepoint our users are using the web only.

 

any advise would be great.

Our "cloud only" sutdents have a token 100kb mapped My Docs as windows dosen't like not being able to write the a user's documents. Then we've got mapped onedrive for them to actually save stuff to.

We map users OneDrive using group policy. We map O drive to the local location of the user’s OneDrive directory, the location that the OneDrive client saves to. No third party tool or script required. We do however use IAM Cloud’s Drive Mapper to map SharePoint document libraries for all users, works perfectly. We have an on site file share for multimedia files, as the speed of SharePoint can’t cope with large files.

Yeah no problem. Will post screenshots tomorrow on here for you. To answer one of your original questions, we gave staff 2 months to transfer their files from their file server h drive documents folder to OneDrive, then set their h drive as read only and redirected document shortcuts to OneDrive, then a month later deleted the H drive for all staff. Approx 3 months process in all. Happy it’s finished!!!

Hi @Uber22 and @smithson83 I've documented our OneDrive GPO settings, including folder creation in user onedrive directories, mapping onedrive to O drive in File Explorer, folder redirection plus other settings. It may not be the tidiest at times however it works for us Let me know if you need anything clarifying. We use DM Sytems' OneDrive Connect (https://www.dmsystem.co.uk/user-group-management/onedrive-connect) to map both our user OneDrives and sharepoint shared area. We have a support contract with them anyway and it works really well.

So far we've just put the student shared area up to the cloud. We just replicated it on a Sharepoint share, copied everything up and switched from the local copy to the Shrepoint over a holiday, and kept the on-site version up for a couple of weeks as read only for anything that had been missed.

 

I don't think you can do it without a third party tool, but a mapped sharepoint share looks pretty much the same as local file storage to the end user. Which makes our lives a lot easier.

Is there a group policy to ensure that the local OneDrives on shared computers don't fill up the C: drive? I know that by default the agent doesn't sync but I'm just worried about them selecting "Make all files available".

Files on Demand should be enforced, however there's nothing stopping users from downloading all their files for offline use. So if you're looking at shared devices you may need to clear user profiles every school holiday. However we've been running OneDrive as student homedrives for over a year and haven't had this issue yet, we wipe all machine each Summer. There is a policy you can enable which warns users on low C drive space, but doesn't stop them from filling it up - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/onedrive/use-group-policy#warn-users-who-are-low-on-disk-space
