[mdt] MDT Issues - WINS?

Would anyone have any ideas as to why if i remove DHCP option 044 WINS Server ip my clients are unable to connect to my MDT deployment share?

 

Just set up a onsite DC, a part of the setup was to remove all the WINS DHCP options from all the Vlans. On doing this when trying to image a PC i was getting an MDT error.

 

A connection to the deployment share (\\SRV\Share) cound not be made.

Can not reach Deployroot. Possible Cause: Network routing error or network configuration error.

 

The Client would PXE boot, download the boot image. Start loading MDT then fail to connect to the deployment share.

 

MDT server on a different Vlan.

 

If we put the option back it works.

 

I have tried google but cant find anything. What am i missing?

Have you got IP Helpers configured on your switches? I believe that's the recommended method for SCCM's PXE boot, though it may not be for just WDS/MDT. Do you have options 066 and 067 configured in DHCP? I also have those configured for SCCM's PXE too.

It wouldn't even load the WinPE if this was the case I believe.

 

I'm getting the same error as OP at one of my sites and can't figure it out. We don't have option 44 configured on any of our DCs. I'm going to try turning off their DC as it's just used as a backup to see if that works for me. Can't get over there to test it though for a while.

IP helpers set up for PXE and no option 066 and 067.

 

I have disabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP on the MDT server Ethernet but made no difference.

 

DNS looks good, cant find anything that could lead to issues.

 

Tired using Wireshark to see if i could get any additional information but not getting to far with it.

 

Unsure what else to look at.
