Hi everyone,

I have recently moved SIMS on to a remote server and we now run it as a remote app.

We have an issue whereby xml files from SIMS open in internet explorer instead of Office XML Handler. I have deployed an appassociations.xml file to the servers specifying the default program but this hasn't helped.

Does anyone know if there is a way to specify default programs for remote apps?

Thank you in advance!

As far as I'm aware when using remote apps it uses all associations on the sever so if you have office installed on the server and set the defaults for xml as office handler it should open remote word for all users. I've never had any users complain they cannot open the files remotely by having this setup.

Okay brilliant, thanks. I assumed that it would be a similar situation to standard machines whereby the users have their own default app associations and I’d need to specify for them somehow (hence why I used an default app association file) but if it works without that will make my life a whole lot easier!

Also, if it's opening in IE couldn't you just remove it?

This is another method I never even thought of, whether that would then default it to office XML handler I don’t know, I’ll have a play tomorrow. Thank you.

Do you have Excel installed on the remote server? You know that any files that SIMS open will use applications on the remote server, essentially running IE/Excel etc as RemoteApps also.

Yes I do, Office 2019 is installed on the server.

So one of the above methods half worked. I uninstalled Internet Explorer 11 and now when you run the reports it asks you to save and open (doesn’t let you open directly as it should do) even though Office XML handler is the default.

It will do for now, but ultimately I’ll need it to operate the same as the local version to convince staff it’s a good idea!

Unfortunately, the hunt for a solution continues. Uninstalling IE11 now means that the reports will not print to PDF (as they use IE11) even with Google Chrome installed, it will not use it as an alternative.

The most annoying thing about this is that Office XML Handler is the default but SIMS still refuses to use it.
