PaperCut Mobility Print with Chromebooks - Searchdomain issue

Hi,

 

I am trying to configure PaperCut mobility print for our Chromebooks. I have setup the mobility printer server ok, published the printer, all the DNS tests pass, and deployed the mobility print app, however I am unable to see the published printer on our Chromebooks. I have configured mobility print with Multiple Subnet (DNS) as the Chromebooks are on a different subnet to the print server.

 

When I look at the troubleshooting on the PaperCut website, it says in network status of the Chromebooks the NameServers and SearchDomains must be correct. The NameServers are correct but the SearchDomain isn't, its blank.

 

I have tried adding the DHCP option 119 for DNS Search with the correct SearchDomain but it still isn't populating, can anyone help please?

I've been doing the same today! Have you got multiple DC's? - check it's replicated the DHCP to both if you have. Delete the lease as well and try again, it should then pick it up. I also had to do some tweaking to Smoothwall as the chromebooks still wouldn't show any printers even with the search domain added.

I noticed that the Chromebooks were trying to connect to: http://rpc.pc-printer-discovery:9163/printer and similar urls, (note missing the search domain) and despite me adding this to the proxy bypass they were still hitting the smoothwall. For some reason Smoothwall wasn't resolving that address so, in Smoothwall, I went to: Network > DNS and added a Static DNS host for 'rpc.pc-printer-discovery' to resolve to my print server and it all sprang to life!

Thanks, I've deleted the lease and tried again, we don't have DCHP replication, have you managed to get the searchdomain to populate to the Chromebooks as it still isn't on ours. I followed this guide;

However other links on the web were suggesting to do it via HEX

 

I have made the changes to Smoothwall as well but at the moment I'm not seeing any traffic from the chromebook to http://rpc.pc-printer-discovery:9163/printer

We had a similar issue recently, thought it was down to the SearchDomain being blank, turns out it's to do with the SSL Cert,

but used this command first to add the option:

netsh dhcp server add optiondef 119 "Domain Search List" byte 1 comment="DNS search path"

and then used the script in the above link and it worked (once renewing the lease)

 

Worth checking the SSL cert as well as DalekSec says but ours was ok.

Thanks @russlp I now have a search domain showing on my Chromebooks, however still no printer!

 

Do you use a .local or a .com for your domain? we are using a .local and I noticed in the mobility print troubleshooting guide that .local is not supported for Apple devices, however I wonder if this also applies to Chromebooks?

We don't use .local - it's possible the chromebooks don't like it. Just out of interest, can you reach any of the PaperCut urls on your chromebooks? (They should show a list of printers JSON)

Thanks @russlp, it turns out the problem was an old mobility print server on the network conflicting with the new one. Old mobility print server turned off and the printers started appearing in the Chromebooks!
