Link 1: £1 million worth of 'thruppences' to be sold to stop coin collecting dying out [The Telegraph]

£1 million worth of historic silver “thruppences” is to be sold off in an effort to stop coin collecting dying out in the digital age.

The threepence piece is one of Britain’s longest-serving coins and has been in circulation for nearly half a millennium, first introduced during the reign of Edward VI in 1551.

Now the London Mint plans to hand out 120,000 of the original George V thruppences - dating back to 1911 - for free from its vaults.

Coin collectors can usually buy the coin from about £8.50, meaning the giveaway will be worth more than £1 million in total...

..... isn't that what's supposed to happen when you discontinue/stop minting a coin...? :confused2:

I think they mean the hobby/art/whatever of collecting coins is dying out, not the actual physical coin itself.

True. I also didn't make the connection that this was the London Mint rather than the Royal Mint.

My bad!

I thought the idea of coin collecting was to try and hope coins go up in value, making a bit of money on the side.

If they flood the market with these, I doubt they'll be worth the £8.50 suggested xD
