IT_JB Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 Spotted this in the O365 admin centre today and then tested using the newest OneDrive version and it works! https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=&searchterms=56383 We redirect Desktop/Docs/Pictures to the local file server currently but i was looking to move to OneDrive using KFM on our journey to going serverless but the sticking point was that it only works for C:/ path folders, meaning I would have to remove the redirection, copy to the local drive and then upload to OneDrive. Now I can skip that step and go straight from the redirected folders. Thought i would share for others who were looking into this but faced the same problem! 1
supportman Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 Nice! Not sure how this really helps though. I found Onedrive way to slow for things like this.
mullet_man Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 Not exactly the same but I implemented Known Folder Move when we replace all our teacher laptops just before we broke up for the summer, so far not had any problems at all. Make sure you install OneDrive with the /allusers switch so that OneDrive start's up straight away, it logs in really quick. For some older laptops I've moved them into a KFM group and it auto redirects the users desktop/docs to OneDrive. It works really well here. Some staff are loving the autosave feature of O365 too, I think at some point we will ditch our file servers and have everything in sharepoint. Small steps but OneDrive so far has worked pretty well.
RobFuller Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 Do you just need to implement Known Folder Move and not configure folder redirection or do you need to set that as well?
mullet_man Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 Do you just need to implement Known Folder Move and not configure folder redirection or do you need to set that as well? Yep exactly that - set KFM in the OneDrive policies and make sure your folder redirection is set to Not Configured. We had it set to local folder and that messed up OneDrive and it wouldn't set the folders to sync with OD, you can't have any configuration set for the KFM to work. 1

IT_JB Posted October 22, 2019 Author Posted October 22, 2019 so does it copy stuff from their old network space or just change it to be a onedrive based docs folder? Moves it from the network storage to OneDrive using the same KFM GPO, previously it would just fail if it was not a C:/ folder path.

So do you have to remove the folder direction setting from gpo? We redirect the desktop to users areas and it moans about a policy being configure so it won’t move it.

The current redirection policy just needs to be changed to "not configured" and then it will work.

The test device & user i moved to the new OU kept the redirection settings and then on login KFM kicked in, transferred everything to onedrive and redirected the folder to the "C:/User/username OneDrive... etc" path. If you have the silent flag enabled you don't even see it happen, it all uploads in the background then the redirect only applies after the whole folder has finished uploading.
TSEARS Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 For this to work did you have to have Offline Files enabled so there is a copy of the files on the laptop/PC?
TSEARS Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 For this to work did you have to have Offline Files enabled so there is a copy of the files on the laptop/PC? Ignore that, realised that when put to 'Not Configured' the folder redirection stays in place, so files are there to be uploaded
DrCheese Posted May 5, 2020 Posted May 5, 2020 Can we still have the start menu redirected? yes, but not the desktop. Which makes a bit of a mess for us as that's where we put stuff for staff at current. 1
Tibbey Posted May 5, 2020 Posted May 5, 2020 yes, but not the desktop. Which makes a bit of a mess for us as that's where we put stuff for staff at current. Thanks, managed to get it working in the end; had to disable the "Prohibit User from manually redirecting Profile Folders" Group Policy setting before OneDrive migrated the folders.
Tibbey Posted May 5, 2020 Posted May 5, 2020 (edited) Has anyone had any luck with removing / redirecting the remaining "Music", "Videos" and "3D Objects" folders within This PC?: Have tied the "Disable Known Folders" GP setting, with no effect. Edited May 5, 2020 by Tibbey

You can only 'officially' redirect the desktop/documents/photos folders. You may be able to use gpo folder redirection to bodge it, but in my testing (a number of years ago I have to add), it caused sync issues and stopped working if the local user profile corrupted for any reason.
broadld Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 Been looking into this for a while. So basically if you have folder redirection set which most people will. You have to set it as not configured. Then get user to login to a machine they have logged into before then it will redirect & move docs, desktop & pics to Onedrive? Just making sure i have got this right in my head. What are people doing in terms of backups for the datathat is now in the cloud? Thanks Dave
DrCheese Posted May 7, 2020 Posted May 7, 2020 No - It works like below If you have your files on a file server that you redirect to already, you'll need to move those up before hand using a migration tool like https://mover.io If you have your files already on a local drive (So you've got staff with things dumped straight onto c:\User\documents) blah blah then yes it'll move those Backup - I'm looking at using Veeam365 for this, but there are others (Barracuda etc)
