windows server 2003 upgrade

hi there

 

i am looking to update server 2003 to to 2016 server need to set this up but can i do a upgrade on this first then do share permissions on folder after this

 

has any one done this

 

can any one help

Unless it’s a rare install of Server 2003 x64 (not often used back then) you won’t be able to do this, sorry. Windows Server went 64 bit only with 2008 R2 and you can’t upgrade across architectures.

Are you virtual or physical? My advice would be to go virtual. Spin up a new 2016VM and migrate the roles across.

 

For us we’d p2v the Old server especially if running on older hardware. Although with such an old OS I’m not sure how well that would go. We’ve done it with win2k8 bit it’s a relief to update!

I'm guessing that you have services/roles on the 2003 box as is the reason why you have not migrated across to a new server yet.

 

If it is just hosting shares these can quite easily be moved to be honest, I've done this in the past at a college with thousands of users with out too much difficulty. If it is user home folders the AD object can be modified on mass within Active Directory Users and Computers. The only slight issue you may have doing this way is if user home folders are individually/hidden shared, you may need to script that.
