Hi..

I am looking for a small program that I can load onto a stand alone PC taht will not allow users to print unless they put in a pin or something ..

Any Ideas ?

Client side?

I think that both ranger and impero have something like this but I don't think that's what you're looking for.

I use papercut on the server which is excellent and comes with a client application - it gives great control and is IMHO cheap.

That again may be overkill for your needs though.

I was told last Friday that PMP 7 can be installed on a PC to control a local printer. (and can also be configured to use the server database for rules)

I haven't tried it, but might well give it a go in the coming weeks to to see how I get on with a non-networkable A3 printer that's becoming an issue!

Have you looked into an external printserver? or is half the problem people connecting it to their laptop and printing? ;)

We just want this stand alone PC with a colour Laser attached to have printing restrictions so that only the supervisor can print.. with a password or pin..

There are no laptops involved.. the printer cannot be accessed from any other PC

can you not achieve this by restricting the printer to the supervisor / admin account? (Maybe not)

or a login script that disconnects the printer and only connects it for specified user? could be done via local group policy if not networked?

how does the supervisor user get the content that they need to print?

or is it all generated on that 1 machine

It's all generated on the Stand Alone PC....

then cant you do what kesomir suggested and just have 1 user on the system and give the supervisor the username/password for that 1 pc?

@Grommit - At several sites I support they use Canon photocopiers which have such function. When printing to any of the photocopiers, you must enter a pin otherwise printing is not permitted.

You can also specify quota levels and if the photocopier is colour, how many black and white and colour pages are allowed.
