HP Laptop Backlight

I'm having an issue with a HP 250 G6 Laptop. The laptop has been in use for just over a year.

 

Over the past year, the screen is suddenly extremely dim upon startup. It's so dark I can barely make out the bitlocker text box. Each time it goes off, after a few hard resets it comes back on as normal and this seemed to fix it and it doesn't have any problems for another few months. Last week however, it went again and no amount of resets fixes it. The laptop also doesn't power on using the mains when the battery is removed. I've just put a new screen into it but that new screen is dim as well.

 

I can plug in a vga once I'm past the bitlocker screen and the screen shows up as normal on the external monitor. It's just the built-in display that doesn't work.

 

Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be? I'm at a loss as to what the cause is.
