Start Menu Folders Windows 10

Hi All,

 

Hopefully someone can help.

 

Having a total meltdown with the start menu programs (not tiles) - not got to that bit yet!

 

Basically.

In windows 7 we had start menu redirection (not full app redirection).

Worked fine.

 

Windows 10, I can redirect icons and cleared the "common programs" however folders do not appear which is odd.. or a feature.

 

Teachers need their own start menu - including folders

pupils need their own start menu - including folders

 

 

Hope this makes sense.. what can I do ? Redirected Desktop is working a dream! (with windows 2019 server gpos)

 

Any help appreciated.

As I understand it, you get one level of folders but that’s it. So for example if you created folders in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Applications\Microsoft Office, any shortcuts in there or any other folders at that level or deeper would all appear listed together on the Start Menu in the Applications folder. You won’t see the Microsoft Office folder, but you would see any shortcuts it contains. The same applies to a redirected Start Menu. Also if a first level folder is empty, it won’t appear.

 

Not sure what the Microsoft UI designers were smoking when they decided this was a good idea, but whatever it was, they should probably avoid it in future.

It's also worth noting (as this one caught us out) the start menu will only show program (or document) shortcuts not folder shortcuts/links.
