SSHD or SSD

I have some 2011 iMacs which I want to upgrade. I know SSD are better than an old skool spinning Hard drives, but I was wondering if anyone has had any success with SSHD drives in iMacs and do you still need the heat sensor?

I've done one 2011 iMac. Just SSD though - SSHDs are pointless IMO with all the disadvantages of HDDs but not that much quicker. I stuck the heat sensor to the SSD.

 

If you have the tool kit to get into the iMac (sucker cups, torx bits and patience) it's not a bad job.

Thanks. I just changed a Hard drive this morning ( iMac 2011) and its pretty easy; I have done the SSD upgrade to my brothers 27 inch 2011 iMac as well and that was no problem. It's just the heat sensor is a bit pricy for what it is. But the SSD power makes up for the cost.

SSHD are just the same speed as HDD in most circumstances. The small amount of cache does however fool the benchmarks into showing a speed increase.

 

I have retrofitted my iMacs and Macbook pros with SSD drives. It's so worth it makes a 8 year old mace feel nearly new!

Yep I’ve installed ssd’s in 2008 iMacs that my kids use. Perfectly usable for now. Don’t bother with sshd. No performance gain.
