USB C Power Delivery - what does it mean?

If I buy a laptop with USB-C that supports Power Delivery, does this mean that I can charge it using USB-C?

 

Only it comes with its own PSU that uses a standard charging pin.

 

And if it does charge using USB-C, if I buy a docking station that supports Power Delivery would I be right in thinking I can dock using just the one USB-C cable and everything will go down the one cable whilst it also charging the laptop.

That's right. We're looking at staff laptops in the near future and USB C docks delivering power will be the biggest benefit of having a single cable delivering power, audio & video.

That’s the theory anyway. The actual practice may be different. For instance, I have at least one HP laptop which charges from a USB C port but will still only charge from an HP charger.

 

The Dell USB C docks that I’ve got will only charge Dell laptops because of some proprietary jiggery pokery going on.

 

Don’t blindly assume, get some hardware in to test before you make a decision.

i assume its like my pixelbook. I can plug a usb c device into any usbc port and it works i can also plug in a usb c charger and it will charge. i an also plug in say a usbc monitor and the laptop will output video and charge on the came cable and if the monitor has a usb hub i can connect up say a wireless keyboard and mouse and a pen drive and a printer all via 1 cable

Only if it supports Thunderbolt 3.
