[tv show] Sandman coming to Netflix

Various sources are reporting that Netflix are spending big on Neil Gaiman's seminal comic series. Gaiman is on board as Exec P, though this could just mean, "OK if we just leave this truck full of money here for you Mr. Gaiman?".

 

Have to say a TV show would seem better suited for an adaptation, though whether they just follow the main arcs and miss out the standalones (which would be a shame, "A Dream of A Thousand Cats" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream" - in fact, all four parts of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sandman:_Dream_Country - are great) is yet to be seen.

 

Cautiously optimistic.

I wonder, then. What with Lucifer getting one final season, whether they might find roles in the new show for Tom Ellis and Lesley-Ann Brandt.

 

Their characters are part of Sandman canon anyway and they jo such a good job in their respective roles.

Casting for the show not quite as spot-on, but still pretty good.

 

 

 

 

That said, I didn't manage much of the audio as it was an audiobook of the comics and way too literal; I think a dramatisation would've been a better way to go. Presumably the show won't have this problem!

I have to admit I'm rather enjoying the nerds and geeks of Twitter melting down because they're putting the characters pronouns on the cast posts. They're also getting upset at Jenna Coleman's casting as Johanna Constantine as being "gender swapping". It's as if they have not actually read the source material! John doesn't appear till much later in The Sandman. Johanna is in it long before John appears.

 

(Also, Matt Ryan is nowhere as good quality as the actors they're getting for this, so part of me hopes they recast it if they get that far, and don't try to bring him in)

I'm with Gina Carano on the pronoun thing, but imagine that Neil Gaiman isn't and I guess it's up to him. Lots of thoughts on that matter, but this isn't the forum for that discussion! It is mad that they'd complain about Johanna, though.

 

As for Matt Ryan, he's not a great actor but I do like him as JC. He's deffo more JC than Keanu (though I do have a soft spot for that movie).

Personally, I'm going to assume that they're using Johanna because they don't want to be stuck with fans pushing for Matt Ryan to play the part.

Was relieved to read that it wasn't my eyesight and the odd aspect ratios in episode one (and apparently the whole show) were deliberate.

Finally got to "The Sound of her Wings". Was a bit worried about this as, having read the comics when they came out, to me Death is a pale Goth chick. However Kirby Howell-Baptiste really captured the character, if not the look. The ep turned out to be my favourite so far. Hopefully we'll get a Season 2 so we can see Shakespeare again with his "special" performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

They're claiming that it was always the plan to wrap it up in two seasons as a lot of the comics barely feature Dream and so they're only going with the main arc. Guess this means no "Midsummer Night’s Dream" or "Facade" . However, they made "A Dream of a Thousand Cats" and "Calliope" and are releasing "Death: The High Cost of Living" on the 31st of July. This seems to suggest it was more a case of a combo of "not enough viewers, but enough to give you a season to wrap it up" and Neil Gaiman's alleged behaviour.
