burgemaster Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 Has anyone compared these 2 print software`s ???? When we installed the trial of PMP6 it was showing thousands of copies on all the samsungs, also kept crashing the spooler? Anyone had experience with Print Limit Pro ? Cheers
Michael Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 I use PMP 6.0.0.123 (from memory) and it works fine. I see no reason why the thousands of pages being counted aren't accurate. As for the spooler crashing, this would most likely be to do with a driver rather than PMP. Have you tried updating to the latest drivers? You didn't say over what period of time the thousands of documents are being printed, but if it's a short period, it might be overloading the server (depending on the spec).
FN-GM Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 I haven't used that software that you are using. I would recommend trying pcounter we use it and never need to touch it.
Diello Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 Print Manager Plus here - works like a dream. Would recommend making sure you have the latest version of PMP and the Samsung drivers. Never known it to crash the spooler. Also, 2008 edition is now out, so could try that - haven't upgraded yet though.
mrtechsystems Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 Print Manager 6 brilliant bit of software been using it for about 2 years now I think new version 2008 is out now techincal support is good to ask for Christian/Shaun @Diello doing the upgrade over the summer 2008
rob_f Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 I was very impressed by PaperCut - Print management, quotas, control, monitoring and accounting, some very neat features that facilitate not only accounting students' print but also allow you to do things like let staff charge their prints to a particular department (defined by AD/LDAP group memberships), thus aligning it with systems/procedures your reprographics staff might be using.
burgemaster Posted May 12, 2008 Author Posted May 12, 2008 thx for the replies, I have decided to go against the flow and try "Print Limit Pro" The main reason is the support, Print man plus support via email from the USA... PLP is UK telephone support. After speaking to both of them i dont want to touch PMP, the foriegn lady was rude and unhelpfull. PLP support were great and really helpfull. The trail of PLP is doing everything that we need. Only downside is it costs a little more than PLP, but that price alone is worth it for phone uk support. Been trying to repair/replace our Lacie 2tb NAS drive for 7months now. Email Support to the USA is terrible, waiting 2-3days for a reply like "have you restarted the unit", its been back to them twice, but thats another story !...
SOSAGES Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 (edited) its the same product as papercut (mentioned above) just rebranded. (edit) the support is likely to be a lot better and less of a wait time as it is all UK based and i expect they have a lot of experience in the UK market. depends what you want from a company PLP is a good product with good support so is papercut just depends what lvl of support you think you will need and go with who will offer it. The extra money is worth the peace of mind sometimes trial both software and see how you go (and make sure u contact support from both) Edited May 19, 2008 by SOSAGES
Michael Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I had similar problems Gibbo and eventually asked several times to be taken off their mail list. In the end I was blunt and said PMP7 offers nothing amazing over PMP6 to justify me buying/upgrading it. The message was well received as I haven't been bothered again
burgemaster Posted May 13, 2008 Author Posted May 13, 2008 (edited) hi, Cost - £598 (Inc 1years Full support), with an option of £159.99 each year after for support. Upto 2000 users Is that alot more than papercut? we are not yet finalised? Cheers Edited May 20, 2008 by burgemaster

burgemaster Posted May 14, 2008 Author Posted May 14, 2008 (edited) PaperCut NG - Pricing & Licensing £434 upto 2000 users apparently (educational pricing). 200quid saving there Just noticed the support seems to be Austrailia ? Is there UK Support? Another quick Q, can u hide the tray icon? or stop the users right clicking and Exiting? If they do this they cant see jobs being rejected etc Cheers Edited May 14, 2008 by burgemaster
maniac Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 I seriously doubt you'll need support for papercut much, it's exceedingly reliable. We have had it here for over a year now, and it just works! Their support although in australia, has a UK number which is forwaded by them to australia, so you can call them at local rates, and there was someone there when I called them once with a query a while back. Top marks from me, and if you want to try it before hand, you can install it in monitoring only mode for free Mike.
jsnetman Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 My vote goes for Papercut NG as well, install and forget plus it does quotas for internet usage.
dwimorberg Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 I had to dump Print Limit Pro off our server eventually. There were some very odd things happening with it; PDF documents wouldn't print past Page 3, if you tried to print a Publisher document with clipart in, it'd accuse you of trying to print half a million copies and crash. In the end I stopped the kids from accessing the colour printers at all and installed the Papercut Print Logger on the server. At least I can keep an eye on who's printing what and it's a tiny app. Just my 2p worth -Michael
tmcd35 Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Another +1 for PapercutNG. Got my copy through last week. Haven't time to seriously play with it yet but I had a quick install and glance round and it seems fairly intuitive and easy to use. Also the licenses are a lot cheaper than PMP. We paid £400 for the 1000user license.

WE use Print Limit Pro, which I believe is the same (but with UK support?) been really good, but recently the client has been crashing and staff then cannot print as their work is left paused!
PaperCut Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 WE use Print Limit Pro, which I believe is the same (but with UK support?) been really good, but recently the client has been crashing and staff then cannot print as their work is left paused! Hi, You're correct that Print Limit Pro is an OEM rebrand of PaperCut. Print-Limit is however running almost a year behind in releases :-( We're pushing them to try and keep up to date. I'm not aware that they offer UK support, however I'd recommend getting in touch and testing them out... the client should not crashing! If you have any trouble getting action out of them, let me know and I can follow up from my end. Regarding PaperCut support, I'm one of the developers at PaperCut in our Melbourne office and would be happy to offer any EduGeeks direct developer level support except on days were England defeat Australia in the Cricket :-) Just PM me. I'm also online early morning UK time (afternoon our time). Also there are two good PaperCut resellers in the UK that are technically focused - ITS and Select Tech. Cheers, Chris chris Developer @ PaperCut
Pumaedition Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 I may have to look at some Print Management software for our system. at the moment we have...none, and the version of PMP we have (that used to run, but not properly) is very, very old! Papercut seems to be the preferred choice. How easy is it to set up etc?
Geoff Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Very easy. I suggest you try the 40 day trial. PaperCut NG - Download There's copious documentation at the above link too regarding implementation.
Pumaedition Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 wow...got it set up in less than 15 mins. Very impressed with PaperCut NG. Got the 40 day trial, but can see us purchasing it very soon, as it seems fantastic. It's what we have needed here for years! Just trying to figure out how to get different costings for coloured pages etc. I can set the program to charge 15p per page, and then subtract 10p per grayscale page, however, I sent a black and white document to the printer, and it still charged 15p. any ideas?

PaperCut has two types of colour detection. Page-level and document-level (also called standard detection). Document-level is the default as it works with most printers. It works by applying the grayscale discount when the user selects the Grayscale or Black & White option in the printer preferences screen. The info in the link above should help. The key is to ensure PaperCut is detecting the job as "grayscale" as listed in its print log. If you continue to have issues, shoot an email through to support /a papercut . com. Pumaedition Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 (edited) It didnt work for us, but I am guessing that is because we atre using PCL6 drivers, for our printers. It's nice to see it as an option though....I may try it out later, by installing a PS driver and re-testing it. Cheers! EDIT: Just tested a PS driver out on one of our printers...Papercut knew that one page was colur, one page wasnt, and charged accordingly. beautiful! Edited June 10, 2009 by Pumaedition
farmerste Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 i have found the opposite with pcl drivers, print manager plus occasionally will say someone has printed thousands of pages when they have not ( on an epson printer ), i am told this is due to none- pcl drivers being used. i use PMP here, we also have Equitrac express installed to control photocopiers, but i am told that also suffers same problem with none pcl drivers ( equitrac recommend pcl-5 ) but if you have none pcl printers on the network you will occasionally get a mad page count showing up, i don't think anyone will solve it anytime soon. We have had this problem for years.
