Hi guys, I hope someone might be able to help me! I know it might not be the done thing, but would anyone be able to give me an ISO of the Cricksoft Clicker 5 installation CD? We've lost ours and the software company want a signed letter from the head and £10 to get another copy, but I'd rather he didn't know it's gone. Hi there, I'm having some awkward problems with our Cachepilot at the moment, I've tried a few things but I'm getting nowhere. Could anybody suggest something I've not done yet? Briefly: Cachepilot 4.1.8, AD integration which up until this week has been working fine. Now though, the Pupils content filtering seems to be very inconsistent. As far as I can see, some users are filtered no problem, some are totally ignored by the Cachepilot (don't even show up in the Web Filter Log). However, some computers also seem to be the cause of this: Where one user can access, say, Youtube (which is blocked for the Pupils) and another can't, swap the computers the users are logged onto and the person who was previously blocked can now access Youtube, and vice versa. I've checked the AD settings in the cachepilot, they seem to be fine (I updated the admin password to make sure, the logs state that AD integration was successful, see below). I've checked the TCP/IP settings on the affected computers, all are DHCP coming from the DC and are similar to each other (IPs aren't, obviously). I've gpupdate /force 'd all the affected computers. This produced mixed results in the ICT room: one PC started being filtered properly, the rest didn't, even after 3 or 4 reboot/logons. I've rejoined some of the PCs to the domain, just to make sure. No difference there. Any ideas? Have you tried your local Freecycle group? If you google [your area] Freecycle you'll probably find there's one to join, and then you can offer the projectors and request other stuff you might want. People will come and collect, and you'd be amazed at what people will take from you (and what they'll offer too). I got rid of a load of OHPs that way.

I don't think that thinking is particularly flawed. Sure I need to change the way I do some things but I already have an economical car (68mpg avg.) and I ONLY use it for driving to work. I do have another car too but that's just for looking nice on a sunny day. The trouble with living in the middle of nowhere is there's no infrastructure for an alternative to using a car. Even if I took the bus or train to work it'd be a 3 mile journey to either station. I think the arguement is that some people could stand to use a car a lot less (those who live close to work or in a town environment with a good bus or train service), but other people don't have an awful lot of choice. Changing lifestyle, upgrading house and car to make them much more energy efficient is a major step in the right direction but even if we're using less energy, it's still a large proportion of fossil fuel that goes into producing that energy. We need something that doesn't pollute, or alternatively go back to a simpler way of living! I can see this type of energy production may be a fair way off yet, but if we rely more and more on technology in our lives then we'll need more power from somewhere which needs to be sustainable and, dare I say the buzzword, green! Hope that doesn't sound too flamey, just putting a point across! I agree too! It's just getting the people who think "why should I change when noone else will" to do it too. Convenience is the thing here and there're a lot of sacrifices we'll make for it!

Heh it's £1.08 for unleaded here, £1.06 for diesel. Fuel prices here haven't been below £1 a litre for months; when the prices dropped again after being *really* high (£1.34/L for diesel) they didn't go very far. I've been contemplating cycling into work a few days a week but it's 11 miles each way of mostly uphill (both ways!!) and I just can't seem to find the enthusiasm I'm an environmentally conscious person but having a car for 9 years has made me really lazy! Before that I used to cycle everywhere or get the bus if it was a long journey. I think we need to plough profits from oil into resarch into other energy sources to depend on before the oil runs out, something non-polluting and easy to make. Hydrogen fuel cells anyone?

Hi, does anyone have a power management solution to power down the monitor when the Windows Logon screen is waiting for someone to come along and give it something to do? Unfortunately our TFTs are starting to burn in with the logon box and neither screensaver nor power management will get the picture off the screen until after someone's logged onto the PC. This means that sometimes the computers are sitting there for hours at a time with the logon box in centre of the screen! I have Visionsoft PowerOut installed on the server with all the PCs as clients, and also I've set up the Easy GPO Power Management tool for Active Directory which causes IP Message Buffer errors on all the clients. Still no joy, although the PowerOut power scheme is set on all PCs to turn off the screen after 20 minutes. After someone logs on it's even less predictable; sometimes some PCs will shut the monitor down, and their neighbours don't, and the screensavers seem to be ignored even though I've specified the .default registry settings manually. We're running 2003 AD with XP Pro SP3, the main culprits are Dell Optiplex 280 machines, the rest are a diverse bunch of locally built stuff. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated! I had to dump Print Limit Pro off our server eventually. There were some very odd things happening with it; PDF documents wouldn't print past Page 3, if you tried to print a Publisher document with clipart in, it'd accuse you of trying to print half a million copies and crash. In the end I stopped the kids from accessing the colour printers at all and installed the Papercut Print Logger on the server. At least I can keep an eye on who's printing what and it's a tiny app. Just my 2p worth -Michael

We've just had our pathetic bathroom extractor fan in our server cupboard replaced with a 12" Expelair unit which is ducted through the roof. Before then the server room temperature was 45C+ in the winter (Doors and windows open in the summer!!), but with a grille in the stud wall, the amount of air getting sucked through by this new fan is amazing, it keeps the temp down to a manageable 17C now which is fine by me. There's also two speed settings and a reverse option to suck cooler air in if necessary. I always find aircon a bit of overkill, as does our bursar who thought it was too pricey; so long as you can shift the heat out to somewhere else and replace it with cool air coming in, it does a good job if you're on a budget. Hi there Dhruva, Pulling in the Active Directory usernames wasn't so much of a problem in FreeNAS as was what to do with it next; there doesn't seem to be any more integration than that of it being able to display the usernames and group names (maybe I'm missing something obvious though?). This was the reason I turned to OpenFiler instead. I don't have my FreeNAS notes here at the moment, but I'll reply again tomorrow and let you know how I got it to talk to AD.

Here you go, a step-by-step guide to getting OpenFiler to work with Active Directory. I'll mention it's not the definitive way of setting up OpenFiler but it worked for me when practically everything else didn't! It was mostly the totally un-self-explanatory stuff like for the LDAP Username and passwords, having to put in "[email protected]". I trawled through the OpenFiler forums to grab bits of hints and tips but they weren't really a lot of help. I kind of got the feeling they wanted you to spend the money on buying the user guide!! Admittedly it was my fault the shares weren't working, I specified the wrong subnet, but again there wasn't any real guide to telling you to set up the network first However, that said, it's working like a charm now! Woot! I can confirm that after only two short weeks of fiddling around with Openfiler, I've managed to get it working! They don't make these things easy do they?! Aaanyhew, if anyone's interested I'm currently writing up a graphical how-to for getting Openfiler 2.3 set up with Active Directory. I'll post a link here a bit later on. Thanks for the suggestion for Openfiler though, it's doing the job nicely

Hi there, does anyone have experience in getting FreeNAS shares to work with Active Directory groups? I'm finding a bit of a black hole of information relating to this apart from a few reports that it doesn't work in v0.6.4. I'm running 0.6.9 and can get FreeNAS to successfully pull in the AD user list, but that's about as far as I get. AD has the following security groups: Pupils and Staff FreeNAS has the following shares: Shared (for pupils) and Staffdata (staff only) The local dirs are set with chmod to Owner group Staff, then 777 for Shared and 770 for Staff. What I'd like is for the AD "Staff" group members to have seamless access to both shares, and the AD "Pupils" group members to only have access to the "Shared" share. I'm hoping this can be done but my *nix file system knowledge is pretty ropey to say the least! Any help will be much appreciated. Tea and cake readily available!! Cheers, Michael

Just out of interest, do you ever have problems with these units falling off the domain? Occasionally, say once a month, I have to go into the setup and enter the domain admin username and password again to get the domain userlist back up.

Yeah I've just done that as a workaround this morning and it's getting everyone off my back! The DNS entry for the Terastation is already on the server, and pinging the hostname from a machine gives a response, there's just no access. I guess the fault in the firmware is the problem we've got here too. I've done a firmware upgrade once before on a Terastation and it had to go back and be replaced shortly afterwards While it's working I'm getting the data off it and onto a USB drive. I'm thinking of having a play with FreeNAS and taking the dead Terastation's drives for that; I can't get the unit to start up at all now. I really hate them! I'll keep you updated of the hilarity that will surely ensue -Michael

I'm having exactly that problem now. One of our Terastations has gone down with an E21 "Unable to access network chip" error and now the other one is refusing hostname access to everyone. I'm really hating these units now...the head's breathing down my neck because I haven't got it fixed in 20 minutes...gah! I'll try the DNS entry idea, did you have any luck with it? Cheers, Michael
