This is okay now (I think) but I had a panic.

I tried to log onto my OWA this morning but it gave me 404. I RDP'd into the network to have a look and my desktop machine was showing outlook had lost connection too.

I was able to RDP into the exchange server and their was no error messages so I checked the services and EVERY SERVICE HAD BEEN STOPPED AND SET TO DISABLED :(

As you can imagine I panicked thinking someone had got in or a virus was playing silly buggers so I went into the event log and it showed all the settings had been changed a couple of minutes before I logged on.

Then I refreshed and the event log showed that they had all been reset to auto start and then the lovely 'automatic updates - please reboot to finalise blah blah blah' popped up.

I think I logged on at the exact moment that an update kicked in... think they are set to 3am so I need to check why it messed up at 9.15am.

I can enjoy my Sunday now :)

I've seen something similar to this before - it's a bit worrying!

I think it's best to set servers to download updates and prompt when they're ready rather than auto-install; that way you avoid potential problems like this.

Now can you fix my Exchange problem? May be a bit more difficult because I think the builders have turned off the power (they're moving a sub-station and were supposed to give us notice ...) Just have to do without email until tomorrow :-)

yeah we have WSUS for all the workstations and let us choose to update the servers....

This means we get nagged at everytime we remote into any of the servers :(

I need to check tommorow because I thought I had set it to prompt.
