Website Translation plugin recommendation for Wordpress

We're a bilingual school and need to have a bilingual website.

 

We need to use Wordpress as free hosting is available to us for that. I was using qtranslate and it's various forks as support dropped off. I now think we need to find something more reliable and pay for it if necessary.

 

Can anyone recommend a good plugin?

Forgot to say... we have been trialling gtranslate (the paid version ~£70 per year)

 

They say that the quality of translation is near to human standard but it's definitely not for the Welsh language anyway.

It's good that you can edit what's there very easily.. the translation is cached by Google and works pretty seamlessly no matter how complex the underlying code, and for that alone it may just be worthwhile.

 

I guess using a standard plugin.. like qtranslate, there's an awful mess created in the backend to manage.

I use GTranslate free version on my sites and am well aware that it doesn't handle real text well, I use it so foreign users can make sense of the navigation menus. If your site is only ever going to be bilingual it would be worth getting a proper human translation to serve rather than a machine based translation which will never be as good. If you buy into a plugin you'll be "paying" for all the other translations when you only really need Welsh. I also assume that Welsh is quite low on the list of spoken languages and would worry that support for Welsh translations in plugins will be low or non existent...

 

Are there any students who speak English and Welsh you could rope in? Would look great on a student's CV

Well most students and staff speak Welsh as well as English. I've not come across a Welsh person yet that can't speak English. I don't speak Welsh and I'm the only willing volunteer!

 

If the site was in Welsh and auto-translated to English it wouldn't be a problem. I could edit that.

 

I do have a lot of the content already translated. In my experience it's the software that's the problem. At least with GTranslate paid it's a very simple page at a time edit. No dual input fields strewn throughout the backend that don't quite cover everything that needs translating.

 

I don't intend using Google's paid translation service to translate. It's too poor for that - just to let me edit the 2nd language.

You would think not wouldn't you!!!

 

It's those damn English brutally enforcing the locals to stop speaking Welsh not so long ago. Apparently the English were unusual in wanting to destroy the local culture of any race they conquered rather than assimilate it. I used to work with a guy who was beaten with a Welsh Stick at school for speaking Welsh. This was primary school too! Those were the days.

 

 

No impact except some very irate Plaid Cymru activists shutting us down.

Haha yeah, you definitely can’t just leave it in English alone just because everyone can speak it - the parental apoplexy would be something to behold! The way Welsh and Welsh culture were treated and oppressed, a bit of cultural diversity and heritage is good.

 

Used to the similar with jTranslate on Joomla - finding someone to actually write the translations was a massive pain!
