Decent A4 office scanners

Any recommendations for general office use?

 

Been a while since I've looked into these. Got an old HP6300 which is decent enough if a tad slowish.

 

Budget anywhere from 100-300+ each.

 

Would be useful to scan straight to PDF, otherwise software recommendations for such would be helpful too.

I have a Canon LiDE 25 set up on a dedicated Windows XP machine (no screen needed). Pupils can simply walk up to it, press "scan", and have a scanned image turn up in a networked file area. The software it comes with will scan straight to PDF. The scanner itself is powered over USB. Cost around £30.

Yeah, saw that post! Got two specced for our ICT room.

Bearing in mind how well the lowest-end one in the range works, I'd say just go for one higher up in the product range if you want something faster. Heck, the all-singing, all-dancing LiDE 600F is still only £130. Comes with a vertical mount for space-saving, too.

If you want some serious digitisation and TWAIN compliance isn't vital then look at Fujitsu SnapScan.

 

I bought one of their workgroup spec scanners a couple of years for my fiancée to digitise her worksheets and other resources and was stunned enough that I sat down rather gingerly after setting it up to scan the first set of 10 sheets through.

 

I figured I'd have enough time to go downstairs and put the kettle on.. Wrong! It scanned all of the 10 sheets in less than 30 seconds.. both sides in a single pass. All straight to PDF or JPEG..

 

Granted it's not Twain compliant but from what I can tell the reason for that is it would scan too slowly if it were.

 

 

Edit: Forgot to mention you can setup various options but from a PDF point of view you can scan multiple sheets to a single PDF or scan each sheet to PDF. Useful. Oh and many of the Fujitsu's come with Adobe Acrobat Standard or similar so you can edit things too.
