Hotmail and Outlook

I'm having trouble finding out how often you have to log into Hotmail to keep the account active, i think it's 90 days can anyone confirm this?

 

 

Also does anyone know if using the Office Outlook Connector to login counts or do you still need to login via the web every 90 days? I know that Live Desktop Mail counts but not sure about this.

Found this in the Hotmail help section.

Free Windows Live Hotmail accounts become inactive if you don't sign in for 120 days, or within the first 10 days after signing up for an account. After an account becomes inactive, all messages, folders, and contacts are deleted, but the account name is still reserved. If the account stays inactive for an additional 90 days, the account name may be permanently deleted. If you don't use your Windows Live ID (The user name and password that you use to sign in to any Windows Live, MSN, or Office Live sites and services. If you have a Passport Network, Hotmail, or Messenger account, you can use it as your Windows Live ID.) for 365 days, your Windows Live ID may be permanently deleted.

120 days ok that’s not bad. I looked at the help and FAQ and couldn’t' see it (must be going blind), it used to be very obvious.

 

Any idea if logging in via the Office Outlook Connector counts?

When you login to Hotmail there is a ? in a blue circle just below where your email address is shown. I clicked that and then did a search for delete account.

I would guess so as you're still using your Hotmail username and password, right? You're also connecting to the Hotmail servers to retrieve the emails. As a safeguard you could login via the web once in a while.

I seem to remember that using Outlook Express didn't count in the past.

 

Unfortunatly it's not my account so it's not upto me to do the logging in.

 

Anyway not to worry we'll find out in 120 days :-)

Are you still able to use Outlook to connect to a Hotmail account?

The last time I tried, it failed and I was informed that free hotmail accounts were no longer accessible with Outlook.

They banned it a while ago because of spam apparently but you can now get the free Microsoft Office Outlook Connector to allow it as long as you have Outlook 2003/2007.

I'm still accessing my free hotmail account through Outlook express, but i received an e-mail a few days ago saying that this won't be possible after next month. Guess it's time to check out this Office outlook connector.

@ WelshTechie: Really mine was stopped ages ago and i've never managed to get it working again i even tried yesterday as i thought something might of changed.

 

The Outlook connector must use a custom port and some other features that you can't use with Outlook Express.

I used to check a number of accounts using the same method, now only the one account works. I never figured out why that one account was allowed to continue.

Possibly when they changed it over to having to pay to connect via outlook.

 

It used to be free, then along long time ago I got an email saying they were going to start to charge, but becasue i'd been collecting my email via outlook for so long they'll let me contiune for free!

I suppose that makes sence, well it's free again now anyway.

It would be great if you didn't have to use their products to connect to Hotmail. Then I could use Thunderbird like I do with other email providers.

To be fair Live Desktop mail is pretty good.
