VMWARE corruption on Boot after an update.

Hi All,

We have 3 hosts. Each host has a number of servers on it. All 3 servers on the become unavailable after an issue after an automatic update on the host. The issue I have is on Boot up; something has become corrupted..

 

Im a bit nervous about trying to recover just in case I cause more issues...

 

The Error is ...

 

Error Loading /state.tgz

Compressed MD5 : 00000000000...

Decompressed MD5 : 0000000000..

Fatel error: 11 (Volume corrupt)

 

ALL DRIVES ARE FINE...

 

In the mean while I restored two of the servers back onto another hosts..

 

But the third server 'our main DC' (Windows Server 2012) Im a bit reluctant to restore the backup DC (Which is currently running) will be out of sync..

 

Any Help would be grateful...

 

I work in a school and not had ANY training.. LOL

Does your server boot from an entirely separate disk (mine boots from a USB stick, for instance). When my host fell over back in March (similar issue on bootup after a power cut), I booted it from the install media and simply ran an upgrade from that. It installed over the broken hypervisor, but kept all settings. Enabled me to fix the host completely in about 30 minutes. This was on an older 5.5 instance though.

Thanks for the reply.. TBH there are NO usb needed for out bootup.. I am just downloading it now from VMWARE.. And will give it a try..

 

We are on 6.5 so guessing will have to to stick to that version?

 

Did you boot from USB for the Restore\rebuild? Everywhere I read it mention CD!

I used a CD. USB is where I have the actual hypervisor installed (on an internal port). Yeah stick to 6.5, may pay to update it manually too as you're doing this (rather than risk it again with the update mechanism) by grabbing the latest to boot from.

Just tried an [x] upgrade and preserve VFMS data store then error'ed at 79%

see logs for details

 

FileNotFoundError: [errno 2] No such file or directory..

That may well point to further corruption than the upgrade can cope with. You may have to try installing fresh - I'd do this to separate storage so you still have the original. That will then let you know if the hypervisor has just been corrupted, or if you have a hardware issue with your server or storage.
