SSL Certificate for sub domain

Our school domain is ourschool.org.uk. I have set up Manageengine SDP on Demand helpdesk (cloud) so that users go to helpdesk.ourschool.org.uk

The main domain has an SSL certificate as the people who host our website provide that. How can I get an SSL certificate set up for the subdomain so I can use it with the helpdesk? Is this something I would have to pay Manageengine for? Or can the same SSL cert used by the main site be used? Obviously when users type in helpdesk.ourschool.org.uk it takes them to the helpdesk which is hosted by Manageengine.

 

Any ideas please?

If the main site has a wildcard certificate or the certificate has a Subject Alternative Name (SAN) with the help desk URL, you’ll be able to use your existing cert. Otherwise you’ll need to get another one. You probably don’t have to get it through ManageEngine.

Can you access your schools domain hosting (cpanel) if so it would be easy. Let me know.

We have access to GoDaddy where the domain names are registered. We do not have access to the cpanel for where the school website is hosted.

So, if you create the subdomain via GoDaddy first, you can then create a DNS record on GoDaddy linking back to your helpdesk IP (if it's internal only).

 

Once done, you can generate a Let's Encrypt SSL which every 3 months you have to renew but it's free. Generate the CSR request and you should be able to import an SSL via your GoDaddy portal, without needing access to cPanel.

Have you given them a shout? The info here: https://www.manageengine.com/products/service-desk/customized-domain.html suggests they don't turn on SSL for custom domains out of the box because it'll cause cert errors:

Assuming ManageEngine simply add your subdomain to a cert with lots of customer subdomains on (helpdesk.school01.whatever, helpdesk.school02.whatever etc), you'd just need to point the DNS record helpdesk.yourschool.whatever to the appropriate ManageEngine domain / load balancer.

 

If you're using DNS CAA, make sure the CA they're using can issue certificates against your domain.
