The black hole at the center of the Milky Way, Sagittarius A, is 26,000 light years away from Earth and shrouded in dust and gas. Usually when we are talking about scale in space we refer to Jupiter, not the whole solar system! One thing I don't understand is; if not even light can escape beyond the event horizon, how do Black Holes emit radiation from their poles?

The constituents of relativistic jets of black holes (where they exist: It's not all black holes that exhibit them) has never crossed the event horizon. As material falls down the gravity well of the black hole it gets superheated, twisted and torn. In a process not yet fully understood most of the falling matter gets dragged into the black hole, but sometimes a small proportion is funnelled into the jets. Understanding how this works is currently an area study in astronomy/cosmology. 2

I went to UCLAN for a lecture on this (and black hole accretion discs) last autumn but sadly can't remember the exact reason! It was a fascinating talk though.

Three years ago, Katie Bouman, then a computer science grad student at MIT, led the development of a key algorithm that helped make this historical image possible. In the TED Talk above from 2017, she explained "How to Take a Picture of a Black Hole." "No one of us could've done it alone," Bouman told CNN yesterday. "It came together because of lots of different people from many backgrounds." In September, Bouman will start her teaching career as an assistant professor at the California Institute of Technology.

This stuff is spookier. After reading up on it, I can conclude that 'because quantum' is the scientific reason black holes emit radiation.
