MovieMaker - Windows 10

Anyone using MovieMaker in Windows 10? Are there any issues?

I read about some issues with Windows 10 and Movie Maker but it is installed and seems to be working fine. With Windows 10 Education 1709.

We had issues with it not quite installing reliably since windows 1809. Seems to work after several attempts. Likely to suggest to teachers to use the newer "video editor" now in windows (think it's an extension to the microsoft photo app), however at first glance it doesn't seem to let you explicitly save the project file to a folder of your choosing, only lets you choose where the rendered final video is exported to, which might be an issue when revisiting coursework after several months break. It's also more of a linear feel rather than the old multitrack type format, which is probably easier to use for simple adhoc jobs, but may restrict those wanting to do heavy editing and compositions on it.

I was looking at these

Movie Maker (MM) falls in to the category of simple yet intuitive, with enough features to create interesting video creations with just a few clicks.

 

I'm guessing MM won't be able to handle (import) videos with more recent encoding formats, but it will satisfy my teachers for another year at least.

 

:lightbulb: Just had an idea of creating a thread somewhere on EduGeek that lists what software admins deploy to their devices - it would be more than interesting to hear about other software that may just add a wow factor to the desktop experience.

Yep, they just need something simple. I've used Movie Maker countless times to do quick and sometimes very complex videos. I still use it now, despite also using more advanced packages.

 

I doubt many of us are going to be replacing video cameras anytime soon, so Movie Maker will probably be good for another 3-5x years at least doing WMV, MP4 formats etc. I've no need to do 4K video anytime soon. Movie Maker should be good for a while yet, As long as the next W10 update doesn't break it.
