Could someone please provide me a ballpark figure for a recent Ruckus installation using their virtualised controller and say 40 APs with all licenses and support?

We're being pushed towards Ruckus by those above and trying to get some information together on why this isn't the world's best idea.

(No comments please on why/what for - for our current and future needs we're still firmly of the opinion that Unifi blows it out of the water on many counts!)

It will depend on a lot but the Ruckus bids that came through on our recent wireless tender were in the region of £170-£180 for a 2x2 AP, about £40 for a 5 year year support package on same and about £10 each to license them on the controller. We didn't get a price for the controller VM, we went with a hardware appliance instead which was about £1600 for one with gigabit ports and £3100 for one with 10Gbe ports.

Bear in mind though that this was for a lot hardware and it was the result of a bid that the vendor put in to Ruckus. It was also for a lot more than for what you're talking about there so if you want to get real indicative pricing, you will have to contact a Ruckus vendor.

Cheers - I'm probably "under-selling" by quite a bit on the AP numbers working on having around 30 currently and we're probably a larger site(s) than most and note that many installers seem to like to aim for every other classroom.

We're not against Ruckus, we're against replacing a working expandable permanently ours solution which we won't end up paying for when support is up and it's then our financial responsibility for expansion/addition/support/licensing. Just making sure that we are agreeing to the right thing before signing off on anything, due diligence so to speak. Edited by synaesthesia

Of course, and without the support, things change and you can be left in limbo. I've seen a school fall into a trap where this lapsed and getting support re-added was less than a whole new, full site UniFi install by a professional company. A lot less. As said, just weighing options.

Cambium! similar spec Aps to Ruckus, vm controller on prem, or cloud or autonomous AP option.

Price per AP is comparable to the above tender response price, but for small numbers.

The supported Controller cnMaestro is free, google and download it and have a play it is comparable in feature set to the Ruckus VSZe

Very compelling, and emergent US vendor, happy to talk further to anyone considering :)

We sell a lot of Cambium now. Very good product, and I would always go for the cloud management rather than hosting yourself.

A lot of Ruckus ex employees went to Cambium

We're looking at purchasing around 30 access points, plus we pay VAT, so from the above:

(((£180 + £40 + £10) * 30) + £3,100) * 1.2 = £12,000

We've just had a quote in for around £20,000 - I appreciate you're buying in larger quantaties, but that still makes our quote seem a little high.

Hello,

We can provide some pricing for your installation - we're a top tier Ruckus partner which gives us access to the highest level of discount from Ruckus. We have been working with them for over 12 years, so know what we're doing.

If you have a particular budget we will work with you and Ruckus to put forward the best solution.

In addition, we will run FOC predictive surveys and can take it from design to cabling and installation.

Perhaps I should have been clearer, for which I apologise; we're not in the market for it; it's being bought for us so to speak and we have no input in the cost. As originally stated, I'd much rather re-do our UniFi system from scratch with the latest & greatest :)
