hemistry7 Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 Hi, I have a query regarding SQL Licenses on Teacher machines. We currently have a dedicated SIMs server (Virtual) which is has a 'SQL Full License' rather than a SQL Express License. All client machines that have SIMs/ Discover and/or FMS installed currently hold a SQL Client Access Licence 2017 Single Licence. There are only 3 administrative machines onsite so the cost of these licenses wasn't much. The Headteacher wants all teaching staff to have SIMs installed on their teacher laptops so that they can use electronic registers and use the assessment module, there are 20 FT teachers onsite here. Our MIS Support company inform me that any device that wants to run SIMs/Discover or FMS must have a SQL client license. I have contacted a Software Licensing company which are quoting £43.48 per machine, as you can imagine for 20 machines this is pricey. My question is does anyone know whether there is a cheaper solution to this? Any advise wold be greatly appreciated. Thanks

We are using a Per Core licence for SQL, which just covers the server and we do not need to licence the clients. There is the Server + CAL option as well which is what your supplier as quoted you for.

From: Price changes to SQL Server Standard: what you need to know | Tech Trust Server/CAL licensing requires one license for the server itself, and one for each user or device that accesses the server. These user licenses are known as Client Access Licenses (CALs). SQL Server Standard on Server/CAL licensing is available as a donated product on tt-exchange for £51 (this covers the admin fee). CALs are available for £12 each. That means the minimum you pay is £63. So a little bit more than I last recall but £291 for 20 users then?

Yes, looks right to me, check with your reseller and show them the link, the £43.48 is closer to the server price.

We are close to our 2nd Year renewal of a 3 year deal and have been quoted: SQLSvrStd ALNG LicSAPk OLV F 1Y Acdmc AP @ £59.21 ex-vat x 1 SERVER SQLCAL ALNG LicSAPk OLV F 1Y Acdmc Ent UsrCAL @ £5.98 ex-vat x 30 FTE staff A few other threads on here have mentioned recent price rises though... Sonic007 Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 Did you really need the full version of SQL? The free express version is fine upto 10GB. As far as I know you dont need to license the clients.

Koldov's pricing looks to be more in line with what I thought it was so there is perhaps an academic discount still available. Check around with other resellers if your present one insists on their pricing which is definitely wrong.

houlta Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 Sounds like you definitely need a chat with a proper Microsoft reseller, give Softcat a ring and talk to their Licensing department, chances are you can save some money in a lot of areas and not just SQL. http://www.softcat.com
