Quick Dell Warning

Just bought a new PC from Dell, to cut a long story short it was specced with 4gig of RAM, and a 512MB Graphics card.

 

Now this is where I made the mistake, I assumed Dell would ship me 64bit Vista since 32bit wouldn't be able to use all that RAM once the Graphics etc had eaten into what it can address.

 

Wrong, they've given me 32 bit and as a result I have close to 700Meg of RAM unusable.

 

Slightly annoyed by this, I could have had 3Gig of higher speed stuff for less. I feel a phone call coming on.

You can still use Vista 32 bit at the same price as 64 you just need to find the media. Someone on here will probably have some they can lend you. I wouldn’t bother contacting them because they won't understand you. The Indian call centres are not very good with Dell.

I dont think you can with OEM keys. They are 32-bit or 64-bit rather then both I think (not 100% sure). Retail has both though.

Surely the sales guys should know that a system with 4Gb RAM is going to require a 64bit OS to perform to the best of its ability?

I wouldnt have thought there would need to be anything psychic about it? Just general product knowledge surely is all thats required

 

Even if this isn't so - surely this would have been picked up when the systems are built and tested?

 

Not slating Dell by the way, I just think that sales guys should at least know what works with what or these things should be picked up when the PCs are tested thats all

Yeah I kinda understand Im not totally innocent but at the end of the day the website just says Vista, not 32 or 64 and as already said if your selling a product you should know how the thing works.

 

I'm slightly more stuffed as its a Vostro I bought for home after being impressed by the ones we bought at school. Brilliant machines, just this one thing thats wound me up. Still not got round to phoning them though.

 

Even if it shipped installed at 32bit but with an optional 64bit disc I'd have been happy.

Vista product keys are not tied to either architecture as far as I'm aware, if you were to buy an oem copy of 32 bit for instance and decided you wanted to use 64 it you can buy the media from MS for a shipping and handling fee. With a royalty oem you will need to request 64 bit installation media from them directly. Have you called Dell to check if they provide 64 bit media and if they even support it?
