Server turns itself off..

I have a strange issue where our HyperV server will randomly crash and stop responding. It's been fine for over a month but did it again around 5pm yesterday.

 

It will start by me noticing I can't remote desktop to it or to any of the servers running in HyperV.

 

If you try to ping the server it dosen't respond. I went up to the server room and plugged in a screen with a mouse and keyboard but the screen said there wasn't any input.

 

I checked on the port on the rear of the server and that's still responding and flashing away as was the port on the switch. It wasn't making a strange sound or anything like that.

 

I have to manually restart it with the power button and then it restarts and works again.

 

I've checked the System event viewer but can't see anything that stands out apart from the computer hasn't shutdown properly.

 

Don't even know where to start in order to fix this but it's done this a couple of times now!

What make of server is it? Have you installed their management software on it to check for issues? Are there any bios updates available for it?

long shot but does it have an iscsi connections listed that are no longer available if so delete them ive had server slow down to the point they stop responding because of this in the past

Check HDD Space and RAM, we had this with a dodgy stick of RAM - replaced it and it's been fine since

Is it linked to any UPS system that could be failing?

It's a SuperMicro. I've checked the software pre-loaded onto it but it doesn't report back any hardware faults as far as I can see It's also on the latest BIOS version.

No just checked now and nothing there.

HDD space is fine got around 800GB free on the system drive and around 700GB free on the spare drive. I've done diagnostic checks on the RAM and nothing is coming up as faulty. Super micro have looked at it but say there isn't a Hardware issue?

This is interesting, yes it is on a UPS although the UPS isn't showing any issues on it's screen. I also have the same UPS running 4 switches and they don't have an issue just the server?

Try HWMonitor and just check the temps a bit, its unlikely but worth a look in case its running a bit too hot when under load.

Checked temps they're around 30's under load which isn't too bad This is killing me can't figure out what the issue is!

Do you have any cards installed in the server? I had a 10gig network card in one server that caused almost identical symptoms. Swapping it out for a new card fixed the issue.

Nope just an in-built Intel Network Card to the Motherboard
