denmyos Posted February 21, 2019 Posted February 21, 2019 We are a semi big company with about 10000 clients. We have briefly talk about moving away from sccm over to another platform to do our package/device management. I'm interested in hearing what other big companies are using as management platform, and why they using that platform. Thank you
denmyos Posted February 21, 2019 Author Posted February 21, 2019 I'm a Noob at SCCM, but the experts are telling me that we have no way of controlling when a client can install a new app etc. When send the app to the pc and hope it doesn't take to many hours before the client realize its need to install the app. It would be nice to do it on the fly, so the customer doesn't need to wait most of the day for the app they need now. I'm sure there is many other issues, but this one was the one that causes the most problems.
skell Posted February 21, 2019 Posted February 21, 2019 I'm led to believe that Desktop Central from Manageengine is an alternative to SCCM, and I know of one company that uses it. I would assume that cost would come into moving away from SCCM, but IMO, I don't think it would be a good move.

Or configure the app accordingly so it ignores maintenance windows. The delivery mech isn't the issue here.
free780 Posted February 21, 2019 Posted February 21, 2019 This was introduced on 1810. https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Configuration-Manager-Blog/Application-approval-improvements-in-ConfigMgr-1810/ba-p/303534 If its a required deployment then it should pick it up within a hour. Unless you have maintainence windows. To be honest I'd stick with SCCM as anything 3rd party is usually playing catchup in regards to OSD/Feature Upgrades. 1

Thank you Hello Denmyos, I have set up a lot of SCCM for clients using the User-centric concept. This was introduced with SCCM 2012. Great stuff! So, What I usually do, I built my Devices and Users collections based on the same Active Directory group referencing the application. Help desk personnel can add either Users or Workstations in those groups, so it saves a lot of time for the SCCM guy responsible for deploying the application to the device or user. Customer satisfaction and waiting time improve too. Delta Discovery and collection updates take about just 5 minutes, when the limiting collection is, either All Users or All Systems depending on the type of collection. Some people prefer to use direct membership, but I think that this is a bad use of a great tool. By default, SCCM clients, will take up to an hour to retrieve their policies. The technician can now easily trigger the policies himself via the SCCM console on the device itself. But you can tell the users how to do it on their computer via the control panel applet for the SCCM client. If you are the Mcgiver type of person. I would suggest creating a script to specifically help the users refresh their policies themselves when you tell them they can to trigger the installation. Hope you stick to SCCM, it is consistently improved by Microsoft Engineers. You have to think on the Macro deployment benefits, rather than just on the single deployment. Best regards,

Best regards, I found this article https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/apps/deploy-use/link-users-and-devices-with-user-device-affinity Is that what you are talking about.?

gshaw Posted March 11, 2019 Posted March 11, 2019 We're using Micro Focus ZENWorks, pretty good at the software deployment and patching side of things but not so clever at imaging (we use MDT for that)
Jcx500 Posted March 12, 2019 Posted March 12, 2019 Wpkg is a good software deployment tool and its free aswell!

I'm sure there is many other issues, but this one was the one that causes the most problems. You can do this fairly easily. Install "Client Center for Configuration Manager" on machines with the SCCM console installed, deploy an application to a machine (wait a few minutes for the deployment to process on the server), then right click on the affected client open Client Center from the menu. You can trigger the machine to check in for policy changes in there via Machine Policy and App.Mgmt. That's what we do. 1
