mikeprice Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 Hi all Just had an obvious scam phone call (again) from the Inland Revenue - recorded message saying there was a problem blah blah blah and there was an arrest warrant out in my name and the police would be sent unless etc etc if you want to speak to an officer to talk about this press 1 OK - kinda obvious to most people on here but my wife thinks she heard/saw something that said pressing 1 to talk to someone can allow them to connect to your phone and steal details etc Hmm - seems unlikely and I haven't heard about that as a possibility - but I was wondering if anyone knows more about this TIA Mike
FishCustard Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 I doubt they'd be able to do anything nefarious given that they called you (beyond the standard tricking people into paying). They could well say "call our team on 0900 PREMIUM-RATE" though, and less vigilant people may fall for it - then they'd make bank from premium rate charges.
PotNoodleTech Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 Yeh usually the press 1 thing redirects you to some premium £1 a minute number and they keep you on the line for as long as possible to try and extract as much out of your phone bill as they can!

Hmm, yeah, I can see how that would happen. Best to just put the phone down and do nothing. HMRC will never, ever, ever call you out of the blue about tax matters, let alone demands for payment.
elsiegee40 Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 From this Action Fraud article it sounds more like you will be connected to someone trying to scam all your personal details out of you rather than suffering any premium rate scam.
TechMonkey Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 Yeh usually the press 1 thing redirects you to some premium £1 a minute number and they keep you on the line for as long as possible to try and extract as much out of your phone bill as they can! Surely that would cost them as they are redirecting you? Your call connects to them, they are then making the expensive call. I don't think I know of a way of a PBX connecting someone directly and cutting the inward call.
mikeprice Posted February 18, 2019 Author Posted February 18, 2019 That is the question I suppose - can an incoming call redirect you to another number and then charge you for it??
LeMarchand Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 The last "Inland Revenue" call I had was from 0300 200 3432 (pretty sure 3416 is also one) if anyone wants to add those to their blocklist.
