I’ve just setup VEEAM Backup and replication on a 2012 r2 backup server, backing up a 2012 r2 cluster. All the windows VMs backup ok but the Ubuntu and smoothwall vm fail with:

Guest processing skipped (check guest OS VSS state and hypervisor integration components version).

Is this to do with credentials or something? I need to add the Linux root credentials in veeam? Not really what the error implies.

How can I backup these guest vm’s?

I've had the same issue with linux backups, and yes, its at least partly to do with credentials. It needs to be able to log-on to the guest to do anything on it.

You need to add appropriate credentials in the credential store and then assign them to that particular VM.

Thanks, I found un-checking

'Application aware processing'

and

'Guest file system indexing'

on the backup job and the Linux VM's backed up OK. no root credentials entered in Veeam...

I am concerned that although it completed the Smoothwall VM really needs 'Application aware processing' and this may not be a good process?

It depends what the VM's are doing - I have the application aware processing turned off but none of mine are running anything complex. If you had a crucial SQL database on it for example, that was running all the time you would probably want it to be application aware. I think the indexing is very much optional. Its supposed to speed up file level recovery, but even the VEEAM manual says its not really needed and it slows down backup times.

I'm not sure the need to do Application Processing on the smoothwall. It may just pay to veeam and then regulary save the config as thats what I'd do anyway for extra sanity.
