Can I do this under the schools G Suite domain or do I need a separate G Suite Domain

Two primary schools have federated, both use G Suite. Rather then having two separate Governor bodies they are forming a joint Governors group and have now got a new name and a logo. I have been asked to setup the new governors group with a new email, drive and website all under a new Domain name.

 

I think it is possible to add a separate domain to an existing G Suite domain, at least it seems to be for G Suite business accounts (not sure for educational).

 

So my questions are

 

1. Can I legally setup the new Governors group domain under a school domain, as the only cost would be for the domain name itself?

 

2. Is it best to do this using an existing G Suite domain or should I just set up a completely separate new domain & G suite account, and get the Governors group to pay any costs.

Yes you can have multiple domains under O365 and G Suite tenancies. There's no legal framework, but it's highly recommended in the age of GDPR. If a Governor leaves, you can close access to their account, whereas if they use a personal account, it may/may not still contain school information.

Just to clarify, I would not set them up a personal G Suite account, it would be a business one that I would administer.

One last question, does it make a difference what domain type I purchase, .org.uk, .co.uk etc

Not really, but best advice, the shorter the better!

G Suite Education lets you add additional domains or domain aliases, so yes, you could add an additional domain to service governors' accounts separately from the rest of the school.

 

A point to consider would be that the other school, running on its own G Suite setup, would have no management over the accounts of its governors (or the domain name).

School A is overseeing school B. The head, business manager etc are all based at school A, but oversee and visit school B throughout the week. School B is a very small school, something like 3 classes, so I would set this up under school A.

OK, so I have added the extra domain. Just want to check am I OK to setup an MX record for this extra domain so the Governors can receive emails to their new domain.

 

I really don't want it to stop emails for the main domain, if that makes sense.

MX records are unique per domain, rather than global, even though you may be pointing both to Google Mail services.

I thought it would all be fine, but when you have never done something before and then you get a warning about adding domains and making MX changes its good to know someone is out in the void to help.
