Link: Mental health: UK could ban social media over suicide images, minister warns [bBC News]

Social media firms could be banned if they fail to remove harmful content, the health secretary has warned.

Speaking on the BBC's Andrew Marr show, Matt Hancock said: "If we think they need to do things they are refusing to do, then we can and we must legislate."

But he added: "It's not where I'd like to end up."

The minister earlier called on social media giants to "purge" material promoting self-harm and suicide in the wake of links to a teenager's suicide.

Molly Russell, 14, took her own life in 2017 after viewing disturbing content about suicide on social media...

We are already blocking p0rn and games sites with limited success (some still get through) If social media sites are indeed banned, and in view of the reasons for those blocks, could there be serious consequences for 'allowing' students access to social media site, post bans?

We ban all social media in school.

But there is a certain amount of responsibility from social media and the parents of children too.

If both took responsibility then maybe cases like this won't happen in the future.

I'm sure the government can block websites

Probably - I suppose they have used it to stop people using Kodi?????

or was that just threats of legal actions

what would happen if you used a VPN and said you were coming from the USA??

Genuinely asking as I don't know how/if this possible
