PEO Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 (edited) Hi gang, Hdd space is starting to get a little tight on the main file server (MS 2K3), so I need to print a list of each students quota size and usage to help me figure out who is wasting valuable space. cheers in advance Edited April 30, 2008 by MrHappy
srochford Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Run this vbscript - replace the "d:\" with the name of the drive you want to check. there are "nicer" ways to do it on 2003 but I can't find the code and I've got a meeting in 30 seconds :-) enumUsers "D:\" Sub EnumUsers(Volume_Label) Set Volume = createobject("Microsoft.DiskQuota.1") Volume.Initialize Volume_Label, 1 For Each quotauser In volume wscript.echo quotauser.logonname & "," & quotauser.quotaused & "," & quotauser.quotalimit next End Sub

LeMarchand Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 JDisk Report Needs Java (hence the "J"!), is free, and can be run off a USB key if wanted. Produces nice brightly coloured Pie charts (I think you can choose other types). I never seem to be able to get it to print nicely (whole chart on one page) without a lot of faffing, so if you use it and figure out how - let me know. Is easy to use (apart from aforementioned printing), and simple enough for even teachers to understand when presented with the evidence.
reggiep Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 How about WinDirStat WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics Run a scan of the directory with all the users home directories and you will be amazed with the results it give you!
User3204 Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Well, first off, Windows does do Quota management natively. Right Click on the D: (or whereever), \ Properties \ and then I think it is "Disk Quotas", you may have to enable it first, and you don't have to restrict them to these amounts. If you want something easier to see then Sequoia View from Technische Universiteit Eindhoven: Info will show in pretty colours etc, it also allows you to see the people who have huge files. We use this, and colour code all audio orange, all video blue, all pictures red, etc, and then you can see what to delete.
acrobson Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 We tend to just search for *.mp3 and anything that comes up we press 'Delete', if anything is majorly improtant theres always shadow to get the odd one back. I'd rather spend a minute restrieving a couple of MP3's than few thousand taking up space on the servers!
timbo343 Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 You could always upgrade to R2 and put inplace File management and quotering. We Are testing Yr 7 with 100 mb each. Also we have got file managment in place for all year groups... that addon is cool... No MP3s on our network for kids

Wow that is weird, it looks exactly the same as windirstat. I wonder who nicked it of who?

Blind Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 He is talking about R2 for Windows Server 2003. One of the big improvements it added was a more robust quota management system. I use it to limit our students to 250MB by default and then bump up individuals that have larger file needs like the graphic arts kids.
Geoff Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 Yes the problem with windows quotas prior to R2 is that it only counted files/folders as belonging to a user if they were the owner of the file/folder. However there's lots of situations where files/folders could end up in a users area but not owned by them. Leading to some interesting misreporting of quota usage.
