December Comet (46p - Wirtanen)

I forgot to mention following my visit to a local observatory on Monday evening.

This year we have a comet currently in the skies which should be visible (barring the weather and light pollution etc.) to the naked eye and (I am reliably told) easily with binoculars.

Comet 46P/Wirtanen will be at its closest approach to Earth on 16 December 2018. The comet will be passing just 30 lunar distances from Earth, making it likely to be visible in binoculars and maybe even to the naked eye. 46P/Wirtanen is a small short-period comet, with an orbital period around 5 and 1/2 years.

It's the night of the closest approach and the sky is full of cloud (horizon to horizon)

 

Even if it were not, I have a heavy, chest cold and I would not be inclined to venture outside for any length of time.
