Icons for URL shortcuts

Feel like I’m doing something really dumb here but when I create URL shortcuts to be placed on user desktops I get really inconsistent results with the icon.

 

The way I currently do it is to create the shortcut on my desktop, download the favicon from the website and change the shortcut’s icon to the favicon. The shortcut then gets copied to a share and sent out via GPO.

 

However, sometimes they shortcut that appears on the user desktop has the favicon, sometimes is doesn’t and I can’t see any reason why.

 

Any ideas why or suggestions if a better method?

Put the favicon on a central share, accessible to all users, and then create the shortcut?

 

Perhaps your inconsistent results are down to some users not having access to where the favicon sits currently?

Use GPP and don’t create a shortcut yourself - let group policy do it. As DaveP said, place the just the icon in a central share and when creating the preference item, point to the icon. GPP will create the shortcut making use of the icon and place it on the desktop.

Moving to GPP and placing the icon in a share seems to give reliable results. Thanks!
