Coax cable to cat5

Hi

 

We currently have a coax cctv system and we are looking at replacing it with IP cameras.

 

Is it possible to use the existing coax cable and convert it to cat5 Poe so we can power the ip cameras using the coax cable

 

I know we can replace the coax cctv cameras with another coax camera but we are looking at IP as an option but would love not to run cable if possible.

You won't be able to do that. You will need new cabling.

However you might find it more reliable and cost effective in the long term to replace your Coax runs with cat5.

Certainly for cameras on buildings it is usually cheaper to replace it with a proper cable. Occasionally I've seen it used when you have an existing Coax which is direct buried to a CCTV pole or similar, but reliability can be a bit hit and miss.

Hikvision do some HD analogue cameras that run over coax. Might be another option.

For what them converters cost you would wire 2 or 3 cameras up from a box of CAT5 depending on length of runs!

It's not worth it, CCTV has moved on so much now that a £500 IP camera is WAY better image quality than an old £3000 sony coax camera.

 

just rip it all out and replace with new POE cameras, or do it one at a time whch is what we are doing as we do not have the budget to replace the whole system.
