Installing Vista - Soooo Slow!

I've just brought a new PC at work. Intel Quad Core Q6600, OCZ 8Gb RAM, Asus Rampage Formula, etc. All running at stock. I was trying to install Vista x64 and it seemed soooo slow! It loaded all the files fine but then took about 5 mins just to get to the welcome screen and choosing the setup language, I was staring at the Aero Background and mouse pointer for about 5 mins. Then it seemed a lot slower than normal installing the rest of it. I left it at the copying files stage copying at 60% it took around 10 mins to get here, before I left work for the weekend.

 

I've seen a lot of threads around the net about slow installs, but no real solutions. My friend said he heard of a problem with trying to install Vista x64 with 8Gb RAM. This was slightly confirmed after doing some Googling, so I removed all but 2Gb, still appeared the same though.

 

Another suggestion was BIOS update, but I don't think there is any updates for the Rampage Formula just yet.

 

So, any ideas what the problem could be?

I'd be thinking along the lines of Disk drivers. Does it have on-board raid, or any special disk config?

 

(it might also be your Avatar causing the PC to slow down - but thats wild guess - PC's tend to only like good football teams....)

I've got 2 brand new Samsung SpinPoint F1 1TB SATA-II in the PC. No special config, both running independantly as IDE.

 

How can I eliminate that they are faulty? If they are.

 

Ahem... as for the football team, would yours be any better? I think not!

Your PC Spec should be fine. are they copies or originals?

 

The next I would look at would be your DVD drive. Maybe try a different one?

They are copies made by Ramesys (Microsoft Select Copies). I have 2 Pioneer DVR-115's I'll try the 2nd one when I get back in to the office tomorrow.

Also try insatlling with just one DVD and One HDD connected...

 

I would probably try and get another copy of the DVD. Are they original copies or burnt copies?

Might be worth looking to see if there is a setup driver for the sata controller.

 

I'm aware the Dell Optiplex GX755's won't work without XP setup drivers for the sata controller. But in this instance, XP Setup doesn't see the disks at all.

 

umm.. not much help but might point you in the right direction?

Hello,

 

I had a similiar issue to you, had the motherboard and ram swapped by the company I brought it from and it was much faster - try another couple of modules for the 2GB of ram to see if that makes any difference.

I just used the DELL Windows CD

 

Obviously - the OEM CD would be shipped with the correct drivers.

 

The standard XP setup CD doesn't come with the drivers which is why I suggested it may help.

Seriously though, it should be simple to trouble shoot, try changing one component at a time.
