Items searched for on start menu can be right clicked and "open file location" to C:

We have right click disabled on the start menu which works........ ish....

 

I've just discovered the if you search for an item (any item) you are able to open it's file location.

 

This only happens if you search for an item, you're not able to right click on the item on the start menu to do the same thing, only searched items.

 

See the screenshot below. Not sure why i'm able to "find" cmd as it's not on my start menu.....joys of windows 10!

 

Also i guess this is a 1809 thing as it's the "new" start menu.

 

Just wondering if anybody has had this issue and been able to sort it?

I can do it in 1803, both from searching as you've shown or under More > on the Start Menu item.

 

But for most items it just takes me to the shortcut folder on the redirected Start Menu, where NTFS permissions stop the kids from doing anything, and for something like cmd or mstsc it tells me "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions..." etc. I'm guessing that's the "Hide System Drives [C:]" GPO.

 

Not ideal--I'd rather it wasn't there at all--but can be mitigated with permissions.

Yeah, I raised this on here a while ago and there appears to be not much you can do about it, it's built into Cortana/Windows Search and isn't related to the start menu, hence the GPO's dont apply there.

if i search CMD and and then open file location...... it opens c: drive for me.

I've now hit the same issue. I've disabled Cortana in the GPO, but it still allows me to search for files like cmd.exe, and show the file location. Disabling access to the C drive breaks OneDrive, which we use extensively. Any ideas?

The Cortana Group Policy options only cover the web search aspect of it I think. The local search functionality can be stopped by blocking the actual search exe using SRP or AppLocker. That leaves everything in the Start menu greyed out when it's first opened, though. It's okay from the second time onwards.

I've blocked Cortana using Applocker. It was late yesterday, so I'm testing further today. Now to turn off the Store (the GPO to disable the store is correct, but it's still there)

You'll want to restrict access to C: using group policy. User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Windows Components \ Windows Explorer. double click on Prevent access to drives from My Computer.

Prevent access to drive breaks OneDrive. We do have hide specific drives enabled.

You can stop people opening command prompt via:

 

User Config -> Admin Templates -> System -> Prevent access to the command prompt

 

(Doesn't stop them from running powershell instead though)

I have that configured - they can't open cmd prompt - however, they can browse the C drive by clicking "show file location"

We tried blocking cortana but it caused the start button to freeze - cortana seems to be too embedded.I gave up and made sure applocker/SRP's were in place to block these files even though they can browse to them, but 10 is a bit of a turd to manage in this sense
